Book Discussion | The Waiting: A Deeply Resonant Graphic Novel (online)

Keum Suk Gendry-Kim was a teenager when her mother revealed a family secret: she was separated from her sister during the Korean War. It’s not an uncommon story—the peninsula was split down the 38th parallel, dividing one country into two. As many fled violence in the north, not everyone was able to make it south. Her mother’s story inspired Gendry-Kim to begin interviewing her and other Koreans who left their hometown during the war and separated from their family. That research fueled this deeply resonant graphic novel. The Waiting is the devastating follow-up to Gendry-Kim’s Grass, which received numerous prizes including the Harvey Award.

Opening Reception | Final Resting Face: Ghost Prints

An exhibition of new etchings and monoprints by American painter Robin F. Williams that riff extensively on the idea of ghosts in both its subjects and techniques. In printmaking, a ghost image is a second impression taken from a plate without reinking—a process that the artist embraces in her monoprints, where graphic elements are layered to create shifting effects of opacity and color. As a subject, ghosts and paranormal beings are central to Williams’ œuvre, which is populated largely by figures that willfully resist normative identification or labels.

Opening Reception | skin-screen-grass: The Vast Possibilities of Image Production

Over the last three years, with increasing focus and intensity, Tishan Hsu’s art has taken a turn towards exploring the vast possibilities of image production today, and how to introduce this all pervasive force into his work.  With the steady development of ever more sophisticated image processing software, and quasi limitless access to photographic sources and electronic imagery afforded by new high resolution databases, Hsu’s palette has expanded exponentially to include a set of tools particularly well suited to engage with the concerns underlying his work since the beginning: How does the screen world affect cognition and our relation to our bodies? How can art channel omnipresent technological effects and reveal their immanent affective content? In other words, what kind of artistic forms might truthfully render this increasingly potent and palpable state of biomorphic affairs?

Discussion | A Conversation with the "Most Powerful Woman" in New York Business (online)

The Wall Street Journal has written, “(There is) an exceedingly small club of women who have managed to move to the top of the brokerage business. That club’s most prominent member is Mary Ann Tighe.” Crain’s New York Business has named Tighe the most powerful woman—across both the public and private sectors—in New York, and chose her for induction to the Crain’s Business Hall of Fame. Placing her at the top of its ranking of the city’s most powerful women, Crain’s observed, “Ms. Tighe has a history of…transforming the face of Manhattan.” Indeed she does. From the revitalization of Times Square and the rebirth of Downtown to the westward expansion of Midtown’s central business district, Mary Ann Tighe has been at the forefront of the transformation of New York’s skyline during her 36 years in the real estate industry.  She'll speak with Scott Rechler.

Acclaimed columnist Drew Magary's new book is a fascinating, darkly funny comeback story of learning to cope with a near-fatal traumatic brain injury. Magary suffered a mysterious fall that caused him to smash his head so hard on a cement floor that he cracked his skull in three places and suffered a catastrophic brain hemorrhage. For two weeks, he remained in a coma. Magary takes a deep dive into what it meant to be a bystander to his own death and figuring out who this new Drew is: a Drew that doesn't walk as well, doesn't taste or smell or see or hear as well, and a Drew that is often failing as a husband and a father as he bounces between grumpiness, irritability, and existential fury.
