Park Walk | Foraging Tour in Brooklyn: Wild Carrots, Olive Berries, Mushrooms and More (in-person)

This park offers all the best wild foods of the rich seashore habitat. The sandy soil is poor, limiting tree growth but benefiting plants that can take advantage of the unblocked sunlight and nutrient-poor soil. You will find burdock, one of the largest, tastiest, and most nutritious of the root vegetables, bitter dock, garlic mustard, field garlic, sheep sorrel, poor man's pepper, lamb's quarters, and winter cress, each with their own flavors and uses. The sun and sand make this one of the best habitats for root vegetables: sweet wild parsnips, peppery common evening primrose roots, highly-flavored, white-colored wild carrots, plus sassafras, the original source of root beer. Fruit and berries are still going strong in late fall: winged sumac, which makes pink lemonade, and autumn olive berries, which taste like a combination of raspberries, currants, and pomegranates. The tour will last for about 4 hours. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing.

Screening | Billie: Documentary About Legendary Billie Holiday (virtual)

Billie draws upon hundreds of newly unearthed interviews conducted in the 1970s by late journalist and to-be Holiday biographer Linda Lipnack Kuehl with jazz luminaries--including Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Charles Mingus and Sylvia Syms--with Holiday's friends and lovers, even with the FBI agents who kept her under surveillance. The film is rich with archival film and photos, with key footage colorized and brought to life as never before. Raw and unflinching, it captures an untold story of exploitation, racism, addiction and politics, and offers a rare look at the tumultuous and tragically brief life of the woman behind one of music's most influential artists. The screening will be followed by a live online Q&A with Emmy-nominated director James Erskine and executive producer Michele Smith, Vice President of Estate and Legacy Brand Management at Concord, and manager of the Billie Holiday Estate.

Play | Euripides' Bakkhai: One of the Greatest Greek Tragedies Ever Written (virtual)

School of Drama at The New School presents Euripides' BAKKHAI, a new version written by Anne Carson, and directed by faculty member Dennis Hilton-Reid. Anne Carson, poet and classicist, writes, “Euripides was a playwright of the fifth century BC who reinvented Greek tragedy, setting it on a path that leads straight to reality TV. His plays broke all the rules, upended convention and outraged conservative critics. The Bakkhai is his most subversive play, telling the story of a man who cannot admit he would rather live in the skin of a woman, and a god who seems to combine all sexualities into a single ruinous demand for adoration. Dionysos is the god of intoxication. Once you fall under his influence, there is no telling where you will end up.”
