Author Reading | Barren Island: back to 1930s

Professor Carol Zoref will participate in the discussion of and reading from her novel, Barren Island. "How does one remember a world that literally no longer exists? How do the moral imperatives to do so correspond to the personal needs that make it possible? Told from the point-of-view of Marta Eisenstein Lane on the occasion of her 80th birthday, Barren Island is the story of a factory island in New York’s Jamaica Bay, where the city’s dead horses and other large animals were rendered into glue and fertilizer from the mid-19th century until the 1930’s. The island itself is as central to the story as the members of the Jewish, Greek, Italian, Irish, and African-American factory families that inhabit it, including those who live their entire lives steeped in the smell of burning animal flesh.

Book Club | August Wilson's Piano Lesson

Set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles household and an heirloom, the family piano. The play focuses on the arguments between a brother and a sister who have different ideas on what to do with the piano. The brother, Boy Willie, is a sharecropper who wants to sell the piano to buy the land (Sutter's land) where his ancestors toiled as slaves. The sister, Berniece, remains emphatic about keeping the piano, which shows the carved faces of their great-grandfather's wife and son during the days of their enslavement. August Wilson (1945-2005) was an American playwright whose work included a series of ten plays, The Pittsburgh Cycle, for which he received two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. Each work in the series is set in a different decade, and depicts comic and tragic aspects of the African-American experience in the 20th century. Please read the book before arriving at the book discussion.

Author Reading | Hollywood Heartbreak | New York Dreams: Overcoming Addiction

Kody Christiansen moved to LA in 2005 where he managed a famous cake shop in West Hollywood which served celebrities as well as made prop cakes for television and movies. Author Reading | Invisible: a forgotten story of a black woman lawyer

The bestselling author on the forgotten story of the black woman lawyer who took down America’s most powerful mobster. Eunice Hunton Carter was a granddaughter of slaves, a graduate of Smith College and Fordham Law, and an African-American attorney—an unlikely combination in 1930s New York. When special prosecutor Thomas Dewey picked 20 lawyers to clean up the city’s organized crime, she was the only non-white man on the team. There she devised the strategy that ultimately resulted in the conviction of lucky Luciano, one of the most powerful mob bosses in history. Carter’s success made her one of the most famous black women in the country in the 1940s, but prejudice and tragedy caused her star to fade with time. Now her grandson, bestselling writer and Yale law professor Stephen L. Carter, has made her long-forgotten story visible to all.

Talk | Charles White amongst friends

Scholar LeRonn P. Brooks, PhD, art historian Andrea Barnwell- Brownlee, PhD, Director of the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, and visual artists Yashua Klos, Robert A. Pruitt, writer Christopher Stackhouse will discuss Charles White’s life, work, legacy, and his influence on today’s contemporary artists. Over the course of his four-decade career, Charles White’s commitment to creating powerful images of African Americans—what his gallerist and, later, White himself described as “images of dignity”—was unwavering. Using his virtuoso skills as a draftsman, printmaker, and painter, White developed his style and approach over time to address shifting concerns and new audiences. White’s far-reaching vision of a socially committed practice attracted promising young artists, including many artists of color, and he became one of the 20th century’s most important and dedicated teachers.
