Performance | Storytelling: Bad Brother: Religion and Politics in '69

Are there parallels between the circumstances of late '60’s and our current political/social stresses? In Bad Brother, Loren Niemi draws on his experience of being in a Catholic religious order during the tumult of Vietnam, Civil Rights, and Vatican II, including his involvement with the September 1968 burning of draft files with homemade napalm by the Milwaukee 14 and their subsequent trial. As Loren says, "I entered The Christian Brothers order Catholic and left seven years later a bad Buddhist with an FBI file." Loren Niemi is an innovative storyteller, a published poet, the author of “The New Book of Plots” and co-author with Elizabeth Ellis of the critically acclaimed, “Inviting the Wolf In: Thinking About Difficult Stories.” He has been performing solo and duo performances in Fringe Festivals around the country since 1995 and is the recipient of a 2016 National Storytelling Network’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

This is the first United States exhibition dedicated exclusively to the artist’s cycle of very small human figures created in France and Switzerland during the Second World War. Evolving against a backdrop of unprecedented socio-political upheaval, this unique body of work represents a profoundly transformative phase of Giacometti’s career: at no more than three inches tall and as thin as nails, these works reveal the path that led the artist to the elongated figures for which he became famous in the final two decades of his life.
