Classical Music | Chamber Works For Violin And Piano Followed By A Wine Reception

Michael Tropepe, violin (performed at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall); Mun-Tzung Wong, piano. Program Grieg (1843-1907) Sonata No. 3 (1886) Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) Sonata No.3 (1743) Amy Beach (1867-1944) Romance (1893) Wieniawski (1835-1880) Variations on an Original Theme (1854) Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770) Devil's Trill Sonata (1740s) About the Program Grieg's Sonata No. 3 was his favorite work and has established itself in the standard repertoire. It premiered with Grieg himself at the piano with well-known violinist Adolph Brodsky in Leipzig. To a certain extent, the sonata is built on Norwegian folk melodies and rhythms. Jean-Marie Leclair was the first Frenchman to write a violin concerto. He was one of the great violinists of his era and wrote extensively for his instrument, adopting the fast–slow–fast concerto format popularized by Vivaldi. He also expanded the repertoire of the violin sonata. Amy Beach was one of the most respected and acclaimed American composers of her era and the first American female composer of large-scale art music. Her "Gaelic" Symphony, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896. Wieniawski was considered a violinist of great ability and wrote some very important works in the violin repertoire. His Variations require great mastery and virtuoso technique. Deep in a dream, Tartini was tempted by the devil's dazzling display on the violin. Upon awakening, the composer immediately wrote down all he could remember and the Devil's Trill Sonata is what resulted. It is his best-known composition, notable for its technically difficult passages. The sonata would become the basis for Cesare Pugni's 1849 ballet Le Violon du diable, as well as Chopin's Prelude N.

Opening Reception | Erotic Feminism in the Me Too Era: Group Show

This show will represent what the #MeToo movement means to each individual artist. The word “erotic” is left to interpretation and not meant to be used as the traditional definition, associated with nudity and sexual nature. For this show, the artists used the title to signify their view of what eroticism means. The show encompasses the challenges women have faced and are currently facing in “Me Too Era,” giving women a voice and an outlet, after suffering through decades of lower wages vs. male colleagues, lower job titles/rankings in the workplace, and a general inequality in the roles of standard society, being subjected to treatment as sexual objects.
