Workshop | Traditional English Afternoon Tea

English-style tea, black tea, Pally's rich tea biscuit will be served. “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”- Henry James Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. While the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared. Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

Workshop | Photography Class: Chasing the Light

Focusing on the people, plants, and architecture of the park, this introductory course also covers basic camera handling, composition, light, and subject matter. Bring your own camera! Landscape photographers Lynn Saville and Kristin Holcomb know all too well how dramatically a location can change as the light changes. The warm glow that sunset casts becomes mystical or dramatic as the darkness descends. The park is a light photographer’s dream. First, the afternoon light bounces off the surrounding buildings. Then, as the light dims, the mirrored reflections of dramatic artificial light bring energy and layers of information to this lovely park and its surroundings. This two-hour class explores ways to observe and capture light. They shoot as natural light turns to artificial. They also discuss specific techniques for observing the urban scene, as well as methods for focusing and exposing to create beautiful photographs in the shifting light. This class is open to photographers of all levels, working with either digital SLR cameras or smartphones.

Author Reading | The Book of Dirt: That Not Spoken

"All we knew was silence. My maternal grandparents never spoke of their wartime experiences. We built myths around them: he was a teacher in the camps, keeping the children busy until it was their turn to be killed; she was capable of lifting the railway sleepers used to build the tracks that brought her fellow Jews to their deaths. It was enough. We knew not to ask. When they died only a month apart, their stories went with them, entering unchallenged into the family canon. Then came the cracks." Bram Presser reimagines his family's experiences from these fragments, creating a powerful novel about memory, history, and identity.
