Author Reading | Book Launch: Mañana Forever? Mexico and the Mexicans by Jorge Castañeda

Why are Mexicans so successful in individual sports, but deficient in team play? Why do Mexicans dislike living in skyscrapers? Why do Mexicans love to see themselves as victims, but also love victims? And why, though the Mexican people traditionally avoid conflict, is there so much violence in a country where many leaders have died by assassination? In this shrewd and fascinating book, the renowned scholar and former Foreign Secretary Jorge Castañeda sheds much light on the puzzling paradoxes of his native country. Here’s a nation of 110 million that has an ambivalent and complicated relationship with the United States yet is host to more American expatriates than any country in the world. Its people tend to resent foreigners yet have made the nation a hugely popular tourist destination. Mexican individualism and individual ties to the land reflect a desire to conserve the past and slow the route to uncertain modernity.

Workshop | Creative Non-Fiction: Oral History

“Oral history,” Donald Ritchie tells us, “is vital to our understanding … of the past. Unlike written history, oral history forever captures people’s feelings, expressions and nuances of language.” In this course we will use oral history to explore contemporary issues that those taking the course find interesting. Whether it is stories of immigration, of understanding the monumental tragedy of various ethnic or environmental disasters, the goal of this class is to have participants be on their way to creating compelling stories from oral histories. With Jacqueline Bishop, author of five books, most recently Snapshots From Istanbul. Bishop was a 2008-2009 Fulbright scholar to Morocco and is the 2009-2010 UNESCO/Fulbright Fellow. She is a full time Master Teacher in the Liberal Studies Program at New York University.

Slide Lecture | Cypress Hills Cemetery

With Stephen C. Duer and Allan B. Smith. This visual presentation offers a rare glimpse into the 162 year history of the historic Cypress Hills Cemetery, the first rural cemetery in Greater New York, located along the border of Queens and Brooklyn. Organized under the Rural Cemetery Act of 1847, the Cypress Hills provides a perfect balance of lush landscaping, funerary art and sculpture, and is a final resting place for some of America's most notable figures, such as Jackie Robinson, Mae West, and Eubie Blake. The authors illustrate and demystify the various legends of those interred in these hallowed grounds. Carved on countless headstones are mysterious markings and secretive symbols that the living can ponder.
