Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” ,br> Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm.

Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a terrifying and occasionally devastating process, preceded by test prep, tutors, all sorts of stratagems, all kinds of rankings, and a conviction among too many young people that their futures will be determined and their worth established by which schools say yes and which say no.

Discussion | The Price to Play: A Discussion About the NCAA and Its Student Athletes

As the excitement of March Madness approaches, so do all the questions concerning the $13 billion college sports industry and the student athletes who won’t see a dime of that money. Is it enough that these athletes receive an education along with room and board? Should they be earning a salary since it is their labors that earn millions for others in the industry? New York Times columnist Joe Nocera’s recent book, Indentured: The Inside Story of the Rebellion Against the NCAA, co-authored with Ben Strauss, looks closely at those who rallied against this powerful institution. He’ll discuss his position with Ekow Yankah, author of The New Yorker piece, “Why NCAA Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid.” Moderating the event will be Jami Floyd, the local host of All Things Considered on WNYC.

Discussion | Beirut Syndrome: Lebanon's Garbage Protests and the Rise of Grassroots Media

Beirut Syndrome is a new independent media platform offering an alternative perspective on current issues affecting Beirut and the region at large. Writers Kareem Chehayeb and Sarah Shmaitilly founded Beirut Syndrome in response to what they felt was an inadequate, political and corporate biased representation of Lebanon within the mainstream media. Since the website's inception in April 2015, Beirut Syndrome has been at the forefront of documenting protest movements in Lebanon as well as highlighting other far-reaching issues such as police brutality, the abundance of NGOs in Lebanon and emerging alignments between Palestinians and Native Americans. The conversation focuses on how Beirut Syndrome and similar independent media sources challenge traditional mainstream reporting and the struggles they face by doing so. Founders Kareem Chehayeb and Sarah Shmaitilly discuss the implications of media representation and reporting strategies in politically tense climates with filmmaker and professor Peter Lucas.

Screening | Scenes through the Cinema Lens: Mutant Musicals

Way back in the 1930s the Hollywood musical had already become a well-established genre. But not every filmmaker has respected genre boundaries. There is a long list of films that seem to be going in one direction but suddenly go off the tracks and begin to look like musicals. And some musicals have moments when they begin to look like some other type of movie. They’ll watch scenes from films that may or may not be called musicals, but all have striking moments that parody and/or pay conflicted tribute to the musical. Films include The Big Lebowski, The 5000 Fingers of Doctor T, Idlewild, Dancer in the Dark, Dirty Dancing, and Pennies from Heaven.
