Book Discussion | Author Talks about Her New Book on Art Activism: The War of Art

What do artists' protests reveal about the possibilities for protest in our democracy? Lauren O'Neill-Butler's The War of Art invites us to learn, imagine, and mobilize, which attendees do together at this talk joined by O'Neill-Butler and fellow writers E.C. Feiss and Ciaran Finlayson. Artists in America have long battled against injustices, believing that art can in fact "do more." The War of Art tells this history of artist-led activism and the global political and aesthetic debates of the 1960s to the present. In contrast to the financialized art market and celebrity artists, the book explores the power of collective effort -- from protesting to philanthropy, and from wheat pasting to planting a field of wheat. Lauren O'Neill-Butler charts the post-war development of artists' protest and connects these struggles to a long tradition of feminism and civil rights activism. The book offers portraits of the key individuals and groups of artists who have campaigned for solidarity, housing, LGBTQ+, HIV/AIDS awareness, and against Indigenous injustice and the exclusion of women in the art world. Based upon in-depth oral histories with the key figures in these movements, and illustrated throughout, The War of Art is an essential corrective to the idea that art history excludes politics. Lauren O'Neill-Butler is a New York-based writer and editor. Her books include The War of Art: A History of Artists' Protest in America and Let's Have a Talk: Conversations with Women on Art and Culture. A former cofounder of the nonprofit magazine November and Senior Editor of Artforum, she has written for Aperture, Art Journal, Bookforum, and The New York Times, among many others.

Dancing | Afro-Brazilian Samba Dance Grooves

The Bahia-born and North Carolina-based vocalist and instrumentalist Caique Vidal joins us with his band Batuque for a concert of Afro-Brazilian samba. "Batuque" (pronounced ba-TOO-kee) means "to drum" and that imperative is delivered with an explosive performance that rocks the crowd! A community organizer for the Brazilian diaspora, Vidal began his journey on the streets of Salvador da Bahia, known as "the Black Rome of the Americas". Playing with Olodum, the founding family of samba-reggae, Vidal has presented the genre's infectious rhythms and message of empowerment across Brazil, Europe, and the United States. A studied rhythmic and choral arranger, Caique Vidal has shared the stage with musical ambassadors including Susana Baca, Carlinhos Brown, and Gilberto Gil. His most recent album, 2023's Save My Heart, unites the sounds and spirit of reggae, salsa, pop, rock, samba and bossa nova into a riveting dance groove. There are two ways to access this event: 1. Concert | Radical Brazilian Pop Band Os Mutantes: Psychedelic, Tropicália, and Protest Music

Though initially only rarely heard outside of Brazil, Os Mutantes is currently acknowledged as among the most dynamic, original, radical, and influential bands of their era. These brash musical experimentalists engaged distortion, feedback, sampling techniques and a prescient selection of studio tricks to create a lighthearted, playful, yet still extreme Brazilian pop. An integral part of the psychedelic, Tropicália and protest movements, Os Mutantes combined unbridled guitars, traditional rhythms, an optimistic vision of the future, and an advanced melodic sensibility. Now, nearly 60 years removed from their founding, Os Mutantes’s approach to sonic collage and a wry tendency toward cultural irony ushered in a near-universal modern music aesthetic.  There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon.
