Film | On The Rocks (2020): Generation-Clash Comedy with Bill Murray and Rashida Jones (virtual, streaming for 24 hours)

Laura (Rashida Jones) thinks she's happily hitched, but when her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) starts logging late hours at the office with a new co-worker, Laura begins to fear the worst. She turns to the one man she suspects may have insight: her charming, impulsive father Felix (Bill Murray), who insists they investigate the situation. As the two begin prowling New York at night, careening from uptown parties to downtown hotspots, they discover at the heart of their journey lies their own relationship. Acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola brings a light touch to this blend of an exuberant love letter to New York, a generation-clash comedy about how we see relationships differently from our parents, and a funny celebration of the complications that bind modern families even as they tie us in crazy knots. Discussion with the director and stars will take place on Feb 14th, 9 pm (listed on our website; separate registration is required).

Tour | Amsterdam: Trading on Tolerance (virtual)

Amsterdam was a powerful and pragmatic trading town. International trade meant the meeting of different values and cultures. So the town often tolerated things they didn't agree with. Don't be fooled into thinking this was ultraism, it wasn't a 'celebration of diversity' by any means; it was definitely a 'putting up with differences'. When people went too far, they paid the ultimate price. The Dutch have famously tolerated prostitution (Red Light District), Catholics (Hidden Churches) and cannabis (Coffeeshops) when all those things were illegal. They rather harshly did NOT tolerate people endangering trade. Take a walk around the very old historic centre: the Old Church/Red Light District (N.B. it is illegal to show women in windows) / Zeedijk / Nieuwmarkt. The stories are interesting and the scenery is superb.

Author of "The Great Kosher Meat War of 1902: Immigrant Housewives and the Riots That Shook New York City", Scott Seligman will share the story that newspapers at the time called a modern Jewish Boston Tea Party. In the wee hours of May 15, 1902, three thousand Jewish women quietly took up positions on the streets of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Convinced by the latest jump in the price of kosher meat that they were being gouged, they assembled in squads of five, intent on shutting down every kosher butcher shop in New York’s Jewish quarter.
