This tour utilizes your feet and the New York City Subway* to transport you from Lower Manhattan, the birthplace of New York, through Wall St and the Financial District, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Chinatown and Midtown Manhattan. There will be ample opportunities for memorable pictures. You'll get the chance to savor NY's best pizza and cannoli and other treats, learn how to play NY handball, maybe bargain with a shopkeeper in Chinatown, observe a game of street chess in Greenwich Village, people watch and window shop in SoHo, and kick back on the Highline Park. This is evidence of the power of images to unsettle, to speak truth to power, to question our cherished cultural norms and our ideas about what is sacred. Join artists, scholars, and museum directors to discuss the power of art and the importance of advocating for art, artists, and freedom of expression. Ai Weiwei will give the keynote address via a video he is creating for the conference that addresses "The Censorship of Artists: Artists in Prison, Artists in Exile," followed by a panel discussion with Melissa Chiu (Hirshorn Museum), Ethan Cohen (Ethan Fine Arts), and Minky Worden (Human Rights Watch).

Discussion | Artist Agnes Martin: A Roundtable Discussion of New Scholarship


In anticipation of the Agnes Martin traveling retrospective (to begin in 2015), scholars will discuss their research projects, many of which are in progress. Special attention will be given to challenges of (re)constructing an artist's legacy, given that much information about Martin (1912-2004) has not been in circulation, and publications are few. Opening Reception | Anton van Dalen's Avenue A Cut-Out Theatre: Paintings and a Model House


Since 1972, Van Dalen has lived in the East Village, documenting the ever-changing culture of the neighborhood through paintings, drawings, prints, stencils, collage works and performances that captured the evolving history of the place. The exhibition will feature new paintings by Van Dalen that present the now largely gentrified East Village populated with upscale bars, fast food restaurants, and well-heeled women. Van Dalen will also exhibit, and perform, his work Avenue A Cut-Out Theatre, a portable model of his house, which he uses as a staging ground for telling the story of the evolution of the East Village. This one-man show incorporates a rotating selection of miniature cut outs and props that each contain a story about the neighborhood from the 1970s until the present.
