Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Concert | Trio Pasqualati performs works by Clementi and Beethoven

This season’s performers were chosen competitively by jury and are among the finest early music artists and ensembles from the New York area and beyond. Today: Clementi and Beethoven, of seemingly very dissimilar character, had links throughout their lives. Beethoven admired Clementi's work as composer and virtuoso. A volume of Clementi's piano sonatas was always at hand and he is said to have performed them frequently. Clementi, on the other hand was Beethoven's publisher in England were he lived after leaving Italy as a teenager. (He also had a business as piano dealer in London, being a jack of many trades). The two trios, although published around the same time speak very different languages, Clementi's elegant and classical, Beethoven's daring and unsettling. Lecture | A New Canaan in Nicaragua? A Caribbean Experiment in Black Freedom, 1848-1854

The California Gold Rush of the 1850s transformed the Caribbean port town of San Juan del Norte (rechristened Greytown after British occupation in 1848) from a sleepy trading post into a teeming crossroads of cultures and politics. Greytown was at once the easternmost terminus of a likely interoceanic canal and a place—to the great surprise of so many travelers—where much of the commerce and governance was in the hands of people of African descent from the Caribbean, the US, and Nicaragua. Greytown’s inhabitants increasingly sought to fashion the town as an island of political freedom, racial equality, and entrepreneurial independence in a sea of American imperialism, white supremacy, and commercial expansionism. Lecturer Justin Wolfe is associate professor and William Arceneaux Professor of Latin American History at Tulane University.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Igael Shemtov

The main focus of the exhibition is Shemtov's series 'The Photo Album, 1979-80,' a project that he intended to publish in the early 80s but that is only now being published as a limited edition artist book of two volumes. In this body of work Shemtov looks at lower-middle-class living environments in Israel during that period, depicting both interiors of private homes and exterior public spaces. Photographing in color with a "family album" snapshot aesthetic; he creates images that combine a sense of transience and poverty alongside his subjects' embrace of kitsch.
