Concert | Before Mickey: Early Music and Early Cartoons (In Person and Online)

Hesperus performs its own early music soundtracks for innovative cartoons from the era just before Disney created Mickey Mouse. Tina Chancey, early bowed strings, percussion; Brian Kay, lute, cittern, dumbek; Spiff Wiegand, lute, cittern, recorder, guitar, percussion. Innovative, historically-informed, and multi-cultural, Hesperus collaborative artists perform a variety of programs designed to bring musical history alive including silent movie soundtracks of early music, musical portraits of a single culture through time, fusions of European early music with American traditional styles, and single-genre early music programs from medieval to Spanish and British Colonial music. Whatever the genre, Hesperus performs with creative energy, technical assurance, and a sense of fun. Founded by the late Scott Reiss and his wife, Tina Chancey, Hesperus has appeared throughout the US, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Europe, most recently at Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Lincoln Center, the Carmel Bach Festival and the Cloisters, as well as at festivals in Italy, Germany, Indonesia and Bolivia. The ensemble can be heard in three Hallmark Channel specials (including the Emmy-nominated Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland), and in the film Sleepy Hollow.

Professor Jan Yablow, Senior Docent and Lecturer at the Whitney Museum of American Art, analyzes the early works of renowned artist Marisol. He will present some of Marisol's masterpieces, talk about her career, and dive into the artist's background. This event is a part of the series about the artistic masterpieces of the 20th century selected from major museums across the globe to share and discuss. Marisol Escobar (1930 - 2016), otherwise known simply as Marisol, was a Venezuelan-American sculptor born in Paris, who lived and worked in New York City. She became world-famous in the mid-1960s, but lapsed into relative obscurity within a decade, before returning to the limelight in the early 21st century.

Lecture | A Very Jewish Christmas: Jesus and Shabbtai Zvi, from Heretic to Hero (online)

In Jewish memory, Jesus and Shabbtai Zvi were heretics, false messiahs who rebelled against the rabbis and against normative Judaism. But a funny thing happened in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: modern Jewish writers and artists reclaimed these heretics and gave them an honored place in Jewish history. In doing so, they transformed the historical figures, Jesus and Shabbtai Zvi, into heroes, projecting onto them these thinkers own modern dilemmas. Speaker David Biale is Emanuel Ringelblum Distinguished Professor of Jewish History at the University of California, Davis.
