Currier & Ives's bucolic scenes of skaters on the pond in Central Park and families gathered by the hearth depicted an American winter that resonates through popular culture all the way to the present; and surprisingly, these idyllic prints were produced in the rough and tumble neighborhoods of 19th-century Lower Manhattan.
