Discussion | A Talk with Robert LiMandri, NYC Department of Buildings

From regulating more than 950,000 buildings to upholding countless technical codes and safety regulations, the Department of Buildings juggles many of the city’s most essential tasks. Homeowners renovating their property, developers laying out new plans for empty lots, and citizens concerned with the conditions of neighboring construction sites all rely on the DOB for help and assistance. Yet how the DOB functions on a daily basis – how it manages its monitoring duties, how it makes determinations on permit applications – is largely unknown to most New Yorkers. Commissioner Robert LiMandri will address attendees’ questions on a wide range of topics, so come prepared to engage in an informal discussion centered around your most pressing issues and concerns.

City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Video | Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 Video Re/trato Projected on the Side of a Building

Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s 2003 video Re/trato will be projected on a building to the east visible from the park’s Seating Steps, as well as the sidewalk. One of Colombia’s most influential artists, Oscar Muñoz has created an impressive body of work that investigates memory and history, and the ways both intertwine with our contemporary society. Here, Muñoz presents a video in which you see the artist painting a self-portrait on a concrete sidewalk by using a brush and water. The hand continuously paints as the portrait evaporates, creating an endless drawing. Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of identity, the work highlights the liminal space between remembering and forgetting, between an image and its obliteration.

In addition to interviews with a number of contemporary philosophers, psychiatrists and teachers such as Sam Keen, Robert J. Lifton, Irvin Yalom, Merlyn Mowrey and Daniel Liechty, the film introduces the viewer to a group of social psychologists, who conduct research in support of what they call Terror management theory (terror in this case not being terrorism, but rather emotional and psychological reaction to mortality awareness). 89 min.

Other | Ian Hunter signs copies of his CD When I'm President

While Hunter's achievements during his first decade as a recording artist would be more than enough to insure his iconic status, Hunter has never been one to coast on past achievements, and When I'm President amply demonstrates his ongoing musical vitality and creative restlessness. Indeed, in the past dozen years, he's made a series of riveting albums that stand with his best and most resonant work, while making a decisive return to touring, delivering incendiary live performances that show his fire to be burning as brightly as ever.

Staged Reading | Polish Theatre Now: Michal Walczak

One of Poland's most beloved and prolific playwrights Michal Walczak returns to New York for an evening of play reading and discussion. Walczak's 2001 play The Sandbox, produced at eleven theaters in Poland and the US and translated into six languages, thrust him onto the international scene. Since then, his oeuvre has grown to include over 20 plays, including The First Time (2004, translated into nine languages), and, more recently, three plays for children. New York audiences were treated to Walczak's rough-and-tumble take on contemporary gender relations as part of Made in Poland: A Festival of New Polish Plays (59E59 Theaters). The playwright will join a special evening focused on his past, current, and future projects, moderated by Frank Hentschker. A staged reading of excerpts from Walczak's plays The First Time and The Sandbox by Lanna Joffrey and Jens Rasmussen, adapted by Kimberly Faith Hickman, will be followed by a Q & A and reception.

Discussion | Let Me In Let Me In Or I'll Blow This House Down: Curators on Process and the Matter of Inclusion

While the role of curator and the process of curation holds as much artistry as the making of dance and performance, they hone in on an equally important need for a touch of transparency surrounding the presentation of dance and the body. What issues and concerns arise inside of a shifting community where representation is crucial for belonging and sustainable support? What are they doing to reach out to more artists? Where are those artists? Who are those artists? What are the complexities that arise while supporting the sustainability of an artist? What responsibility do they have to an idea of cultivating and supporting "newness?" Where is the body inside all of this? How do they digest being on the inside or outside of something spiritually, aesthetically, emotionally and academically? Participants include: Laurie Berg and Liliana Dirks-Goodman (AUNTS) Rebecca Brooks Barbara Bryan Matthew Lyons (The Kitchen) Ben Pryor (American Realness)
