Workshop | Imagery-Based Haiku Poetry

Jay Friedenberg, Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Psychology Department at Manhattan College, is also proficient in landscape painting, digital photography, graphic design, and poetry, including haiku. In this activity, he will engage the audience in a series of visually-evoked poetry exercises. Members of the Haiku Society of America will be presented with several images and be asked to compose haiku based on those images. The haiku will be formed by using the relationships between objects, actions, and narratives in the scenes. They will then share poems with one another in discussion groups and answer questions about the process. The hope is that, as haiku poets, you will learn to compose more often from real-world imagery rather than from intellectual or literary-inspired sources.

The work inspired by imagery from fairy tales as well as the childhood and daily life experiences of the artists. As a duet for dancer Zack Fuller and dancer/choreographer/visual artist Emily Smith, it presents two figures on a journey, undergoing a series of transformations that are alternately disturbing, poetic, funny, violent, and sentimental. Zack Fuller has performed throughout Europe, Japan, and the U.S. in works by the renowned dancer/farmer Min Tanaka. His own work has been presented by the New York Butoh Festival, Plan B in Tokyo, The Dance Hakushu Festival, Mobius in Boston and elsewhere.
