You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. Drawing on early 20th-century Arabic newspapers and books featured in the library’s latest exhibition, Niyū Yūrk: Middle Eastern and North African Lives in the City, Wael Morcos, the designer behind the exhibition’s typography, explores how Arabic type evolved in New York. Morcos highlights the often-overlooked contributions of Middle Eastern and North African creatives to the field, revealing a rich history of Arabic print in the city and its impact on visual culture.

Experience a reading by Richie Hoffmann and MaKshya Tolbert, followed by a reception/signing, with books for sale. Richie Hofmann is the recipient of a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2025 Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. His poetry appears in two previous collections, A Hundred Lovers and Second Empire, and in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, Poetry, and The Yale Review. MaKshya Tolbert practices poetry and placemaking in Virginia. Her recent poetry and prose can be found at Poem-a-Day, Poets for Science, Emergence Magazine, West Branch, Ran Off With the Star Bassoon, and elsewhere. Shade is a place is MaKshya’s first book.

Screening | The Mezcalarians (2023): Documentary/Narrative Film on Mezcal (+ Mezcal Tasting)


Explorers Justin Fornal and Chad Anderson screen their latest collaboration and an interactive mezcal tasting. The Mezcalarians, “a psychedelic-mezcal-pickled-Western”, straddles narrative and documentary film and is a love letter to Oaxaca, one of the most unique regions on the planet. Armed with only machetes and mezcal, three friends embark on an expedition to carry a 50-gallon wood barrel of fermenting agave through remote corners of the region. Along the way, the trio meets some of Oaxaca's greatest artisans keeping Pre-Colombian indigenous culture and tradition alive. A Hong Kong native, Fu's Canton Mambo project fuses salsa, Afro-Latin, and Asian music, culminating in a work of meticulous research, knowledge-sharing, and collective celebration. A global star, Fu has completed several major tours across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America and has created work with such artists as GRAMMY-nominated Angel Melendez for a highly regarded full-length salsa album. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Tuesday before the event at noon.

Enjoy Shakespeare's songs brought to life in a beautiful quartet. An hour of music and Shakespeare filled with love, heartbreak, and hope. Shakespeare alludes to or includes the text of well over one hundred songs in his works. Music was an integral part of Elizabethan life, as it is today. London publishers were constantly producing broadside ballads, madrigals, and consort pieces, and most educated people could read music and play a tune on a recorder, lute, or viola da gamba.
