Symposium | Abstractions: Women & Art in the Post-War Americas (In Person AND Online!)

This is the second day of a two-day symposium exploring the contributions of women to postwar abstraction across the Americas. The program will feature speakers presenting a range of perspectives including a keynote presentation by Mónica Amor. All sessions will be live streamed. Full schedule to be announced soon. This symposium is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Fanny Sanín: Geometric Equations curated by Edward J. Sullivan. Sanín's sustained and powerful engagement with geometric abstraction since her move to New York from Colombia in 1971 stands as a testament to how artists like her persevered in their formal investigations, despite facing exclusion from the art world and navigating its ever-evolving trends. This symposium is meant to foster a dialogue and comparison of the practices of postwar women-identifying artists from diverse geographies and contexts, all who dealt in the realm of abstraction.

Concert | Outdoor Music: Alternative R&B/Soul

Durieux is a Bronx-based band known for an idiosyncratic, yet moving, take on Alternative R&B/Soul. Led by singer and rhythm guitarist Bryan Durieux, the band originally begun as a solo act. Over time, the music evolved to a point where Bryan began to perform on stage with a full band behind him. The blend of Bryan’s talent melded with soulful bass (Seth “Happy” Nicholson), groove centric drums (Danny Castro), and intricate guitar (Gannon Ferrell) is a sight to see. Bryan is a story teller and a performer that writes his lyrics, from the heart, based on experiences in life that anyone can find relatable. Blend that with sound of his band and it becomes an experience that will have you in your feelings, but also make you want to groove and be on stage with them singing your heart out. Durieux’s goal is to bring the euphoric experience of community through music, and to create a space where we all relate on an emotional level and collectively find solace within ourselves.

Play | Shakespeare's Henry V in the Park

Henry V follows the young and newly crowned King Henry V of England as he seeks to prove himself a strong and legitimate ruler. The play begins with Henry’s claim to the French throne, based on ancestral ties, which the French reject. Insulted by the French Dauphin’s mocking gift of tennis balls, Henry launches a military campaign against France. The central action is the Battle of Agincourt, where Henry, despite being outnumbered and exhausted, delivers the famous “St. Crispin’s Day” speech to inspire his troops. The theater supplies 100 chairs nightly for the audience. Those chairs get snatched up fast though, especially at the end of the run or on beautiful summer days, so organizers advise that audience members wanting to use these folding chairs arrive 30 minutes before the start of the performance. You may bring your own chair or something soft to sit on. The theater almost never cancel due to rain, but if necessary, it will post updates on Facebook & Instagram.
