Symposium | Abstractions: Women & Art in the Post-War Americas (In Person AND Online!)

This is the first day of a two-day symposium exploring the contributions of women to postwar abstraction across the Americas. The program will feature speakers presenting a range of perspectives including a keynote presentation by Monica Amor. All sessions will be live streamed. Full schedule to be announced soon. This symposium is organized in conjunction with the exhibition Fanny Sanin: Geometric Equations curated by Edward J. Sullivan. Sanin's sustained and powerful engagement with geometric abstraction since her move to New York from Colombia in 1971 stands as a testament to how artists like her persevered in their formal investigations, despite facing exclusion from the art world and navigating its ever-evolving trends. This symposium is meant to foster a dialogue and comparison of the practices of postwar women-identifying artists from diverse geographies and contexts, all who dealt in the realm of abstraction.

Book Club | Luddite Book Club Discussion on Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport

"How digital minimalists are rethinking their relationship to social media, rediscovering the pleasures of the offline world, and reconnecting with their inner selves through regular periods of solitude." Stop scrolling and put down your phone… this offline book club is a monthly hour of conversation about the role technology plays in our world. Inspired by the students of Brooklyn’s Luddite Club, each month will highlight a different book on the topic of technology’s impact on our individual lives as well as society as a whole, followed by an open discussion to share recent experiences and observations. The book being discussed is Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World by Cal Newport.  Synopsis: Minimalism is the art of knowing how much is just enough. Digital minimalism applies this idea to our personal technology. It's the key to living a focused life in an increasingly noisy world. Author Reading | MacArthur Fellow Discusses His Memoir about Blindness & Disability

Scientist Joshua Miele shares insights about life and disability from his extraordinary memoir, Connecting Dots: A Blind Life, with fellow writer and professor Andrew Leland. At the age of four, Joshua Miele was blinded and badly burned when a neighbor poured sulfuric acid over his head. It could have ended his life, but instead, Miele—naturally curious, and a born problem solver—not only recovered, but thrived. Throughout his life, Miele has found increasingly inventive ways to succeed in a world built for the sighted, and to help others to do the same. At first reluctant to even think of himself as blind, he eventually embraced his blindness and became a committed advocate for disability and accessibility. Along the way, he grappled with drugs and addiction, played bass in a rock band, worked for NASA, became a guerilla activist, and married the love of his life and had two children. He chronicles the evolution of a number of revolutionary accessible technologies and his role in shaping them, including screen readers, tactile maps, and audio description. Connecting Dots delivers a captivating first-person perspective on blindness and disability as incisive as it is entertaining, and ultimately triumphant. Joshua Miele's story is one of one ordinary blind life with an indelible impact. Dr. Joshua A. Miele is a prominent blind scientist, designer, and thought leader in accessible technology and disability. He is a recipient of the 2021 MacArthur “genius” fellowship, an Amazon Design Scholar, and Distinguished Fellow at UC Berkeley’s Othering and Belonging Institute. He is known for creating inclusive technologies that address critical needs and challenge societal assumptions, and for speaking with frank humor and directness about the lived disability experience.

Play | Shakespeare's Henry V in the Park

Henry V follows the young and newly crowned King Henry V of England as he seeks to prove himself a strong and legitimate ruler. The play begins with Henry’s claim to the French throne, based on ancestral ties, which the French reject. Insulted by the French Dauphin’s mocking gift of tennis balls, Henry launches a military campaign against France. The central action is the Battle of Agincourt, where Henry, despite being outnumbered and exhausted, delivers the famous “St. Crispin’s Day” speech to inspire his troops. The theater supplies 100 chairs nightly for the audience. Those chairs get snatched up fast though, especially at the end of the run or on beautiful summer days, so organizers advise that audience members wanting to use these folding chairs arrive 30 minutes before the start of the performance. You may bring your own chair or something soft to sit on. The theater almost never cancel due to rain, but if necessary, it will post updates on Facebook & Instagram.
