Author Reading | Acclaimed Author & Professor Speaks on New Book: A Calculated Restraint (In Person AND Online!)

Author of A Calculated Restraint: What Allied Leaders Said About the Holocaust, Richard Breitman will be in conversation about the book with Rick Salomon, a co-founder of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, Senior Fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Renew Democracy Initiative. The Allied leaders rarely spoke directly about the Holocaust in public. When Churchill and Stalin alluded to Nazi mass murder of civilians in early speeches, they said much less than they knew. Not until December 1942 did Allied governments issue a joint statement about Nazi Germany's policy of exterminating the Jews of Europe. Roosevelt deferred his own public statement until March 1944. Why didn't these leaders speak up sooner? Through close readings of public and private statements, Breitman pieces together the competing motivations that drove each leader's response to the atrocities. Timely and incisive, A Calculated Restraint sheds new light on the relationship between World War II and the Holocaust. Ultimately, the Allied leaders' responses cannot be reduced to a matter of character. What they said--and chose not to say--about the Holocaust must be understood in light of the political and military exigencies that drove their decision-making.

A lesser-known (and somewhat controversial) Tennessee Williams play, Tiger Tail is a play he adapted from his 1955 screenplay for the film Baby Doll. Play | Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well in the Park

"This is the way Shakespeare wrote his plays to be seen." -The Huffington Post Get swept up in one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies with New York Classical Theatre! Written around 1604, All's Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies. When Helena--a brilliant, determined young woman--heals a king, she earns the right to choose her husband. But love isn't so simple, and she must use wit, courage, and a daring plan to win the life she desires. Full of humor, heart, and twists, this rarely performed gem is a story of love on Helena's terms. New York Classical Theatre's signature style, Panoramic Theatre, turns public spaces into the world of the play. Instead of sitting in one place, the audience moves with the actors from scene to scene, following the action as it unfolds. This immersive approach creates a dynamic, interactive experience where every performance is shaped by its surroundings.

Concert | Celebration of Women behind Celebrated Music: Ms. Bobbye Hall, Vanessa Carlton, & More

What's your favorite song? There's a good chance a woman played on it. This concert celebrates the women behind many of pop, rock, and soul's biggest successes: studio and touring musicians, women in bands, and artists who aren't only stellar singers but also killer instrumental powerhouses. From the classic rock and soul era, through the indie and folk hitmakers of the '80s, the Lilith Fair stars and backing band members for Missy Elliott in the '90s, onward to modern 21st-century innovators, women instrumentalists have always stood at the center of music. An all-star, all-women band of musical virtuosos--including Wendy and Lisa of Prince and the Revolution, Ms. Bobbye Hall (Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks), Scarlet Rivera (Bob Dylan), and many more--will join music critic Ann Powers for an evening featuring an exciting cast of vocalists, as they interpret some of the great songs that women made memorable.

Play | Shakespeare's Henry V in the Park

Henry V follows the young and newly crowned King Henry V of England as he seeks to prove himself a strong and legitimate ruler. The play begins with Henry's claim to the French throne, based on ancestral ties, which the French reject. Insulted by the French Dauphin's mocking gift of tennis balls, Henry launches a military campaign against France. The central action is the Battle of Agincourt, where Henry, despite being outnumbered and exhausted, delivers the famous "St. Crispin's Day" speech to inspire his troops. The theater supplies 100 chairs nightly for the audience. Those chairs get snatched up fast though, especially at the end of the run or on beautiful summer days, so organizers advise that audience members wanting to use these folding chairs arrive 30 minutes before the start of the performance. You may bring your own chair or something soft to sit on. The theater almost never cancel due to rain, but if necessary, it will post updates on Facebook & Instagram.
