Concert | Piano in the Park: JazzWeek-Charting Artist Plays Straight-Ahead Jazz

A five, six, seven, eight... Come on down and swing along to the best jazz the Big Apple has to offer. A swingin' pianist rooted in the bebop tradition, Marc Devine began playing jazz piano in high school before moving on to study under the tutelage of trumpet master Clark Terry. In 2009 Devine moved to NYC where he became a mainstay of the jazz scene, performing regularly with his own bands and as a sideman working with musicians such as Fukushi Tainaka, Hide Tanaka, Bill Crow, Jackie Williams, Jerry Weldon and many others. Devine recently released recordings of his NYC trios, Inspiration, on ITI Records featuring Hide Tanaka on bass and drummer Fukushi Tainaka, which climbed to number 34 on the JazzWeek radio charts. His CD The Late Set was also very well received, recorded live at Mezzrow with Hide Tanaka on bass and the legendary Jackie Williams on drums. "Devine is right in that pocket. Simply just smashing stuff that's a tonic for recidivist ears that want to hear it old school, played perfectly." -Midwest Jazz Record

Book Club | Discuss The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride

Book synopsis: In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe's theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe. As these characters' stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town's white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community--heaven and earth--that sustain us.

Workshop | Discover the Healing Power of Blues & Jazz Music

This event is an interactive workshop titled "How the Wail of the Blues & the Cacophony of Jazz Culminate in the Healing Communal Ritual of Sinners." It explores the powerful themes of intra-communal healing inherent in the musical genres of blues and jazz,--emerging from the lived realities of African American communities--have served as powerful vehicles for expressing grief, resistance, resilience, and spiritual renewal. Attendees will trace these genres back to their roots in African ritual traditions, where music was inseparable from healing, memory, and community. By referencing the film Sinners, the group will uncover how the raw emotion of Delta blues and the improvisational complexity of jazz reflect a deeper spiritual lineage--connecting Black cultural expression to ancestral practices of collective care and liberation. Through facilitated dialogue, interactive discussion, curated song and sound examples, participants will experience, explore, and gain a deeper understanding on how these traditional musical forms function not only as art, but as sacred technologies for survival and spiritual transformation. This interactive workshop is a unique perspective on the cultural and therapeutic significance of blues and jazz rooted in African Diasporic traditions.

Play | Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well in the Park

"This is the way Shakespeare wrote his plays to be seen." -The Huffington Post Get swept up in one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies with New York Classical Theatre! Written around 1604, All's Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies. When Helena--a brilliant, determined young woman--heals a king, she earns the right to choose her husband. But love isn't so simple, and she must use wit, courage, and a daring plan to win the life she desires. Full of humor, heart, and twists, this rarely performed gem is a story of love on Helena's terms. New York Classical Theatre's signature style, Panoramic Theatre, turns public spaces into the world of the play. Instead of sitting in one place, the audience moves with the actors from scene to scene, following the action as it unfolds. This immersive approach creates a dynamic, interactive experience where every performance is shaped by its surroundings.
