Gallery Talk | Learn about the New History of American Photography

Hear new insights and untold stories and take a closer look at the works of art. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions. Presented in conjunction with The New Art: American Photography, 1839-1910. This exhibition presents a bold new history of American photography from the medium's birth in 1839 to the first decade of the 20th century. Major works by lauded artists such as Josiah Johnson Hawes, John Moran, Carleton Watkins, and Alice Austen are shown in dialogue with extraordinary photographs by obscure or unknown practitioners made in small towns and cities from coast to coast. Featuring a range of formats, from daguerreotypes and cartes de visite to stereographs and cyanotypes, the show explores the dramatic change in the nation's sense of itself that was driven by the immediate success of photography as a cultural, commercial, artistic, and psychological preoccupation. Book Club | Short Books Discussion Group: Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel

This Short Reads Book Club is a discussion group focusing on novels that are quick to read - the organizers understand your time is precious. But that doesn't mean the club's selections won't be chock full of literary vitamins and minerals, nor will they be dry intellectual exercises devoid of joy and humor. June's Short Reads Book Club selection is Headshot (2024) by Rita Bullwinkel. Description: An unexpected tragedy at a community pool. A family's unrelenting expectation of victory. The desire to gain or lose control; to make time speed up or stop; to be frighteningly, undeniably good at something. Each of the eight teenage girl boxers in this blistering debut novel has her own reasons for the sacrifices she has made to come to Reno, Nevada, to compete to be named the best in the country. Through a series of face-offs that are raw, ecstatic, and punctuated by flashes of humor and tenderness, prizewinning writer Rita Bullwinkel animates the competitors' pasts and futures as they summon the emotion, imagination, and force of will required to win. Frenetic, surprising, and strikingly original, Headshot is a portrait of the desire, envy, perfectionism, madness, and sheer physical pleasure that motivate young women to fight--even, and perhaps especially, when no one else is watching.

Opening Reception | Multi-Artist Exhibition on Neon & LGBTQ Culture

Neon carries a lineage of queer signification. Since the 1960s, queer artists have turned to neon to reappropriate the medium’s commercial qualities, asking viewers to slow down and breathe in its poetics. Language cast in neon invariably hails. madder and madder and hotter and hotter brings together artworks that cite, transmit, remix, and illuminate queer, trans, and feminist lineages for an urgent now. The exhibition’s title comes from Audre Lorde’s daughter, who insisted on speech, knowing that censored or repressed language grows madder and hotter inside one’s body; the language on walls, here, glows. Offering balms, songs, chants, and signs, the works in this show mix the concrete qualities of words and sculpture with the ineffability of light. Artists in this exhibition include former Jeffrey Gibson, Lola Flash, Demian DinéYazhi’, and Nelson Santos, alongside Glenn Ligon, Ja’Tovia Gary, and others. The luminous pieces cite historical icons from Marsha P. Johnson to the collective ACT UP, as well as pop cultural references and ancestral wisdom. Together, they interpellate queer subjects in a bright, warm shout.

Talk | Exploring the Art of Jan Vermeer: Master of Domestic Scenes

This talk examines the life and work of Jan Vermeer (1632-1675). Vermeer's 34 known paintings are still life with human beings. The majority of his paintings are serene and beautiful images of domestic life, usually one or two or three figures in a room lit from the viewer's left. He shows precision in the painting of texture, color and form without looking labored. Mondrian, Picasso, and Dali all echo his work. Speaker Eleanor K. Sypher has volunteered her extensive skills in a series of talks on art history. Eleanor is well-acquainted with ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, The Italian Renaissance, The Baroque in Italy and Holland, Rococo in France, the Impressionists, and European and American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Her career has involved teaching, book editing, and directing a foundation for 25 years.

A member of the Umbra collective and a regular at the Cedar Tavern, Pritchard’s work was recently featured in the 2022 Whitney Biennial. His poetry collections The Matrix and Eecchhooeess were reissued in 2021, and his novel The Mundus was published posthumously in 2024. Play | Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well in the Park (Family Night)

"This is the way Shakespeare wrote his plays to be seen." -The Huffington Post Get swept up in one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies with New York Classical Theatre! Written around 1604, All's Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies. When Helena--a brilliant, determined young woman--heals a king, she earns the right to choose her husband. But love isn't so simple, and she must use wit, courage, and a daring plan to win the life she desires. Full of humor, heart, and twists, this rarely performed gem is a story of love on Helena's terms. New York Classical Theatre's signature style, Panoramic Theatre, turns public spaces into the world of the play. Instead of sitting in one place, the audience moves with the actors from scene to scene, following the action as it unfolds. This immersive approach creates a dynamic, interactive experience where every performance is shaped by its surroundings. This performance is designed for kids and grown-ups alike! Come at 6:30 p.m. to make your own crown/tiara and scepter to help you feel like royalty while watching this bold, funny tale unfold.

Play | Shakespeare's Henry V in the Park

Henry V follows the young and newly crowned King Henry V of England as he seeks to prove himself a strong and legitimate ruler. The play begins with Henry’s claim to the French throne, based on ancestral ties, which the French reject. Insulted by the French Dauphin’s mocking gift of tennis balls, Henry launches a military campaign against France. The central action is the Battle of Agincourt, where Henry, despite being outnumbered and exhausted, delivers the famous “St. Crispin’s Day” speech to inspire his troops. The theater supplies 100 chairs nightly for the audience. Those chairs get snatched up fast though, especially at the end of the run or on beautiful summer days, so organizers advise that audience members wanting to use these folding chairs arrive 30 minutes before the start of the performance. You may bring your own chair or something soft to sit on. The theater almost never cancel due to rain, but if necessary, it will post updates on Facebook & Instagram.
