Talk | Explore the Transforming Art Landscape in the UAE

The talk explores the dramatic changes that happened after the 2006 announcement of plans for a Louvre and a Guggenheim museum in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. In the decade between the museums' announcement and the opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi in 2017, the ways artists worked changed as did the ways curators promoted their work, and the forms of arts organizations themselves shifted – taken together, the UAE case offers insight into how museum and artistic practice is shifting in the 21st century.

Screening | Gargantua (2024): Short Film based on Renaissance Book by Francois Rabelais (+ Director Q&A)

Gargantua is a short film about a book by the 16th century monk, surgeon, and writer Francois Rabelais. The original novel was described by Voltaire as "the worst filth ever vomited up by a drunken monk." The film lives up to that giddy description and uses a different visual technique for every scene- from typewriter drawings to stop motion animation. The story of the original Gargantua and Pantagruel centers around two giants who devour armies and gobble knowledge as they explore the known and unknown world. But this film doesn't really tell that story. It does something else. Every frame of Gargantua was hand-made by Stephen Crowe, who is also to blame for the music. Featuring contributions from Stephen Fry, Jonathan Meades, Radhika Apte, and Sarah Perry. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Director Stephen Crowe.

Screening | Songs of Black Folk (2025): Short Documentary on New Era of Black Musicmakers (+ Filmmaker Q&A)

Songs of Black Folk, which made its world premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival, is a short documentary inspired by the largest gathering of black musical talent on a single stage in the Pacific Northwest, marking a new era for black artists on the meaningful backdrop of Juneteenth. Led by Ramon Bryant Braxton and Reverend Dr. Leslie Braxton, this extraordinary performance group establishes a new tradition, exciting both audiences and the next generation of Black artists. Inspired by this missionthis film captures and celebrates black talent in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. As Ramon so poignantly states, "I want these artists and audiences to be able to walk with their heads held high." This vision resonates throughout the film, which not only highlights the extraordinary talent of these musicians but also underscores the transformative power of music, faith, and community. An immortal Hollywood adaptation of Emily Bronte's much-loved Victorian era novel - though only partly rendering the book's scope - is ranked by many as one of the best movies ever. Lecture | Expert Discusses Works by Edgar Degas & Impressionism

This talk by Eleanor Sypher will dive into the life of Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Degas kept somewhat aloof from the Impressionists, although he was in sympathy with their aim of breaking away from the academic style of art, nor did he paint outside. He was a superb draftsman in his modeling of the human form. Showing the interplay of light, shade, and movement; more than half of his works depict the ballet dancer. He represented figures in Parisian life and experimented in color and form with racehorses and nude women bathing; cultivating ideas from Japanese prints — off-center compositions and scenes of everyday life.

Staged Reading | Mother Animal (Muttertier): Drama about Family Issues

The Goethe-Institut New York and Voyage Theater Company present the North American premiere of Leo Lorena Wyss' Mother Animal (Muttertier) within the Parts Unknown play reading series. Three siblings, one hospital room, and a lifetime of fish sticks and make-believe. For years, they have weathered their mother’s absence by reenacting Titanic—a cinematic echo of their own sinking home. But as they gather at her bedside once more, the games can no longer mask the truth. In this haunting exploration of role-reversal, the children who raised themselves must finally confront the legacy of a mother who struggled to stay afloat. Written by Leo Lorena Wyss. Book Discussion | Award-Winning Journalists Discuss Their New Book, Miracle Children

Journalists Katie Benner and Erica L. Green discuss their new book, Miracle Children, speaking with education expert Dr. Chris Emdin. A riveting investigation into a school, a scam, and a notorious college admissions scandal that exposes the inequalities and racial segregation of American education, from two award-winning New York Times journalists. Gripping and illuminating, Miracle Children argues that the lesson of T.M. Landry is not that the school gamed the system but that it played by the rules--its abuses and deceptions the outcome of segregated schools, inequitable education, and the belief that elite colleges are the nation's last path to life-changing economic opportunity.
