From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Master Class | Fergus McWilliam, Horn Master Class

Berlin Philharmonic hornist FERGUS McWILLIAM was born on the shores of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. After hearing his first orchestra concert at the Edinburgh Festival as a very young boy, he decided on the spot that he wanted to become a hornist and, after his family subsequently emigrated to Canada, he sold newspapers to save up enough money to be able to realise his dream. He graduated from the University of Toronto as a student of Eugene Rittich after initial studies with John Simonelli and Frederick Rizner and made his first solo appearance with the Toronto Symphony in 1967 under Seiji Ozawa. McWilliam freelanced in London, England in 1971 and toured Canada extensively between 1972 and 1975 with the Classical Brass quintet. Tour | Chelsea and the High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to city markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the city to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. This tour takes place Monday and Fridays at 6pm.

Lecture | The Good Listener: Behavioral Neuroscience Considers the Perception of Speech

Our talkative species occupies much of our time each day in conversation. Historical views of this loquaciousness often expressed singular interest in personal motive, asking: What could individuals hope to achieve with so much talk? How do aims shape expressions? It is hardly surprising that such abstract concerns were difficult to satisfy. In our technical era, scrutiny has turned to mechanism, and the psychological focus has been placed on cognitive resources: What must interlocutors know and be able to do in order to converse? Lecturer Robert Remez is Professor of Psychology. A native New Yorker, he was a Predoctoral Research Trainee at Haskins Laboratories in New Haven, and received the doctorate in 1978 from the University of Connecticut. This lecture is in three parts: Monday November 9, Monday November 16, and Monday November 23.
