Lecture | Sticky Data and Superstitious Patterns: Visualization Beyond Cognitivism

Visualization is often exclusively treated as an affair between the eye and the mind, based on the idea that perceiving and thinking are forms of computation. But visual languages play a much larger role in mediating our interactions, facilitating, and constraining our awareness of the systems we are embedded in. Lecturer Dietmar Offenhuber's work deals with the roles of visual representations for understanding and governing urban infrastructures. Using examples from remote sensing, waste systems, street lighting and others, Offenhuber will discuss critical issues of working with data in the context of socio-technical systems.

Theater | College Musical: Failure: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins

By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead – expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual's successes or failures. Performances run November 3-7.

Discussion | Politics and Policy: A Discussion of 2016 Primary Elections

Questions abound as the presidential race heats up and both parties strain to forge their identities in a post-Obama world. Why has the Democratic Party primary been so much more competitive than expected, and what twists and turns can we expect in the coming months? The 2016 Republican primary field is unprecedented in its size and scope; what do Jeb Bush’s challenges – relative his brother's 2000 near-coronation – say about the evolution of his party? Analyze this and much more with some of the people who will shape the outcomes on both sides, including Lis Smith, deputy campaign manager for Martin O’Malley; leading Republican strategist and CNN contributor Kevin Madden, and top aides from several other 2016 campaigns. The panel will be moderated by Robert George, deputy editorial page editor for the New York Post, and Jeff Smith, assistant professor.
