Ansary’s widely anticipated book shatters stereotypical assumptions and the often misunderstood story of women in Iran today. Challenging the dominant narrative of the demise of women and their downward spiral into passive submission since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Ansary argues that “despite the current regime’s best laid plans to redirect women into the private domain, the female population in Iran is distinguished by an unprecedented surge in female literacy and a flourishing feminist movement against the boundaries of traditional religious prescription.”

Author Reading | Oliver Wang discusses his book Legions of Boom

This is a story that’s never told. Not even by the people who scripted and lived it. It takes place from the mid-1970s to mid-1990s - at christening parties, school gym parties, weddings, church hall dances. It vibrates to a self-generated soundtrack of funk, disco, new wave, electro and hip hop created by teenage mutant ninja turntablists: “Many began so young that they could not yet apply for a driver’s license. Yet these same youth could install a performance stage, spin for a crowd of hundreds, earn thousands of dollars, and still be ready for Sunday Mass in the morning, plotting next weekend’s party while waiting for Communion.”

Performance | Voices of A People’s History of the United States, with Viggo Mortensen, Peter Sarsgaard, and More

This commission commemorates the 35th anniversary of Howard Zinn’s seminal book, A People’s History of the United States, with music and spoken-word performances that will bring to life the extraordinary history of ordinary people in the book: those who built the movements that made the United States what it is today, ending slavery and Jim Crow, protesting war and the genocide of Native Americans, creating unions and the eight-hour work day, advancing women's rights and gay liberation, and struggling to right the wrongs of the day. Actors Susan Pourfar, Brian Jones, Viggo Mortensen, and Peter Sarsgaard with musicians Allison Moorer, Stew, Teddy Thompson, and Hayes Carll bring to life original source materials from the rebels, dissenters, and visionaries of our past—and present. With narration by Anthony Arnove, author of the introduction to the new 35th-anniversary edition of A People's History of the United States.

By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead – expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual's successes or failures. Performances run November 3-7.
