Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

With Lee Kogan. Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche.

Discussion | Shattered Icons: The Demise of the Hero in America and Russia

Can heroes survive in our world of dubious celebrities, in a cynical, everyday world with at least two sides to every flawed argument and a debunking for every icon? The demise of the Hero is as poignant for Russia as for America; in fact, Russians may feel the loss still more acutely than we do. How are Russia's heroes, and the loss of those heroes, surprisingly similar and surprisingly different from the contemporary American experience? Meet three exciting new writers as they open a door for us into the psyche of today's young Russia. Moderating will be Jenny Lyn Bader, renowned playwright and author of a celebrated essay on the problematic of heroism in the contemporary context. FEATURING: Yaroslava Pulinovich (pictured), Irina Bogatyreva, Polina Klyukina

Discussion | LGBT Rights in Cuba, the United States and Beyond, with Castro's Niece Mariela

In 2010, the Cuban government began providing sex reassignment surgery free of charge as part of their universal healthcare. This was the result of several years of work by the Cuban National Center for Sex Education under the leadership of Mariela Castro Espín, niece of Fidel Castro and daughter of current Cuban president Raúl Castro. The current developments in LGBT rights in Cuba are remarkable given the discrimination suffered by gays, lesbians, and transgender people in Cuba in the 20th century, as well as comparison with current LGBT movements in the U.S. and abroad.
