Author Reading | Bharati Mukherjee reads from her novel Miss New India

When the TV show Outsourced premiered last fall filled with tired, overplayed jokes that relied on bad desi accents and references to sacred cows, it seemed that American popular cultural representations of India had officially shifted from the "land of the ashram" to "the land of the call center." Acclaimed writer and "Grand Dame" of Indian literature Bharati Mukherjee reads from her new novel, which follows 19-year-old Anjali Bose from her home in a lower middle-class town to the high-tech city of Bangalore. Also, award-winning independent filmmaker Prithi Gowda screens her captivating experimental short film Televisnu, about a young woman who finds work in a call center to ask the question, "What are the possibilities that arise when a moment of personal development converges with a moment of cultural liberation?"
