more >> a Section of Film Theory and History at the Institute of Art of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, present us with a map of all the topics Eisenstein would have liked to discuss in a volume dedicated to the history and pre-history of cinema, a volume he planned but never wrote due to his death in 1948.
What is surprising in these notes - structured like a long index - is the quantity and the variety of extra- and pre-cinematographic references (literature, music, architecture, photography, painting, theater, puppet theater, but also Western and non-Western popular feasts and traditions, religious rites and processions, moving from 'high' art to popular forms of entertainment such as wax museums, circus, etc.): a compound of some of the references Eisenstein had already discussed in his previous published and unpublished texts, with a new, strong emphasis on pre-cinematographic media as well as on the relationships with the avant-gardes.

more >> series of portraits to a wider audience. In New York, the US gave shelter to a large number of leading intellectuals from the German-speaking world, saving their lives in most of the cases. These public figures either stayed in New York where most of them arrived or moved on to California or other places like Princeton. Some of them - Brecht, Mann, and Horkheimer, for example - returned to Europe soon after 1945.
The lectures of this symposium are meant to explore the impact the US, and New York, had on these authors/artists, and on their work. The speakers are also invited to analyze the influence these intellectuals had on American culture and the transformations which happened to their thoughts when translating them into another language, culture, and intellectual arena and addressing them to the American audience. Finally the symposium will discuss how those who returned passed on the American experience to Europe. The speakers may feel completely free to choose the specific angle (biography, theory, politics) or aspect (a single work, a personal constellation) they regard as elucidating.
The conference is accompanied by an exhibition of portraits by Fred Stein.

more >> the 19th-century who was often overshadowed by her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. Recognized in The New York Times as “the dean of Mendelssohn scholars in the United States,” R. Larry Todd curates the series. Hensel wrote more than 450 works, most of which were not discovered until late in the 20th-century. This will be the first time in NYC all of her major works will be performed.
The series continues with selected lieder, Vier Lieder für das Pianoforte, Op. 6, A Cappella Quartets, duets, and closes with Hensel’s String Quartet in E-flat Major (1834).
A pre-concert talk by Todd on Hensel’s life and work will take place at 7 PM.
