Other | 9/11: A Uniform Response, a Photography Exhibit Honoring the NYPD


To mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, The Associated Press and the Museum have collaborated on an exhibition of 30 compelling photographs drawn from the AP archives. 9/11: A Uniform Response pays tribute to the New York City Police Department and all first responders, honoring their role on and after Sept. 11. Poignant images taken by award-winning AP photographers depict the morning of the attacks, the courageous response in the days and weeks afterward, the long road to recovery, and the building of 1 World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, the rising symbol of rebirth at Ground Zero. In addition, the show features a brief documentary film offering interviews with AP photographers represented in the exhibit.

Other | Park Sculpture Unveiling


Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Executive Director of the Union Square Partnership Jennifer Falk, Marlborough Gallery President Pierre Levai, Cultural Affairs Consul for the Spanish General Consulate Iñigo Ramírez de Haro, and Spanish artist Miquel Barceló will unveil the enormous sculpture of a monumental elephant balancing on his trunk. Barcelo’s immense "Gran Elefandret," balances upright on its trunk, its four massive legs outspread searching for equilibrium. At twenty-six feet tall, the bronze sculpture brilliantly portrays an extraordinary, if not impossible physical feat. This contemporary monument believably captures with humor, scale and Spanish courage, the essence of what a public monument can be today.

Concert | Russ Kassoff, Pianist for Liza Minnelli and Frank Sinatra


Russ Kassoff concluded his stint as Conductor/Pianist on Broadway in Twyla Tharp's critically acclaimed Come Fly Away in September 2010, featuring 15 magnificent dancers accompanied by a 19-piece big-band playing live to the recorded voice of Frank Sinatra now on its 1st National Tour. He toured as pianist to Frank Sinatra by request from '80-'91- including the Ultimate Event tour with Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Liza Minnelli. He served as pianist/accompanist for Liza Minnelli from '82 -'01 and Minnelli's music director and conductor for the highly acclaimed Minnelli on Minnelli National Tour ('00). In '07 and '08, Kassoff appeared as a featured guest on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on NPR. He conducts and accompanies Rita Moreno, will perform with his Big Band THE RKBB in concert at the Bahai Center in NYC and is a regular featured performer at The Knickerbocker in NYC with Jazz legend Bucky Pizzarelli! His new CD Bird Fly By achieved #1 on Music Choice plus much critical acclaim!

Lecture | Gods and Snitches: The Real and the Virtual in a Miniature Rio de Janeiro


What does it mean to play with one’s own reality? In 1997, a group of adolescents began building a miniature scale model of their city, Rio de Janeiro, using materials collected from their hillside informal settlement, or favela. Within this mock-up known as Morrinho they created a role-playing game by manipulating and speaking through one-inch tall plastic avatars. Gameplay is animated not by an escapist or utopian impulse but rather by the conviction to depict reality. In recent years artists, tourists, and state institutions have valorized Morrinho as expressive culture, and its creators have traveled internationally as artists, replicating the model in other cities. Based on 18 months of fieldwork as both an avatar in Morrinho and human researcher in Rio de Janeiro, this talk recounts the peculiar history of the Morrinho project as a way of raising questions about the uses of cultural objects and the nature of imagination. In an era of immersive digital worlds, this lo-fi technology prompts us to consider the notion that humans have always been virtual beings. The speaker is a writer-in-residence at the Library’s Wertheim Study, Alessandro Angelini, a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York. His dissertation is tentatively titled, “Model Favela: Youth and Second Nature in Rio de Janeiro.”

Lecture | Jews From/In The Former Soviet Union: Migration, Demography and Identity


The great Jewish exodus from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) has generated the reconstitution of a large Jewish presence of the same origin—mostly in Israel, the US, and Germany. Professor Sergio DellaPergolla reexamines the main patterns of international migration and its influence on major demographic, socioeconomic, and identificational characteristics of FSU Jewry. Educated in Italy and Israel, DellaPergolla is a professor at the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry in The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the author of more than 20 books and 90 articles, and widely acknowledged as the leading authority in the demography of the Jewish population all over the world.

Melissa Milgrom will present a fascinating overview on the history of taxidermy. Nearly every home in the nineteenth century would have had at least one lifelike and carefully preserved taxidermy specimen, from exotic parrots or monkeys to a beloved pet dog, demonstrating to all the homeowner's love of nature and science. Milgrom explores this passionate and eccentric world, tracing its evolution from the days of the curiosity cabinets of princes, kings and the very wealthy, to the present. Don't miss this rare look into a now nearly forgotten facet of the Victorian era. Melissa Milgrom, author of Still Life, a chronicle of her adventures among taxidermists, is a lecturer at museums and universities, she has written about popular culture, subcultures, and people with eccentric areas of expertise for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other publications.

Lecture | Powers of the Hoard: Artistry and Agency in a World of Vibrant Matter


How do objects sometimes act as vibrant things, with an effectivity of their own, a degree of independence from the words, images, and feelings they provoke in humans? Political theorist Jane Bennett delivers this lecture. In the face of virtual realities, social media and disembodied existences, the center will focus on the material conditions of our lives and examine "thingness," the nature of matter. Jane Bennett is Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, where she teaches political theory and American political thought. She is a founding member of the journal Theory & Event, and is currently working on a project on over-consumption, new ecologies, and Walt Whitman's materialism.
