He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 10, 2019 to May 20, 2020.

United States-educated students had an impact on China’s foreign policy-making during the Republican ... more >> era, especially with respect to China’s United States policy. Wellington V. K. Koo was an eminent example of this group. In 1912, Koo, with a newly awarded doctorate from Columbia University, returned to China and was appointed President Yuan Shikai’s English interpreter and a secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, thus launching his career as a diplomat. He served as ambassador to the United States, Britain, and France, as well as Chinese Representative in the League of Nations and the United Nations. He was also appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by both the Peking and the Guomindang governments. His career encompassed almost all important events of diplomacy during the Republican period. This talk aims to shed light on the roles Koo played in shaping China’s United States policy. Speaker Jin Guangyao is a professor in the Department of History, and also the director of the International Center for Studies of Chinese Civilization at Fudan University.

The boats, Whitehall Gigs, are stable, traditional working boats for four rowers and a coxswain. Please note: Rows will last between one and three hours, dependent on weather, tides, and destination. Participants are expected to help launch, retrieve, and clean the boats each session. Community rowing is open to all, although some physical agility is required. The focus of the program is teamwork and recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each participant must sign a waiver. Life jackets are provided.
