Melanie Neilson is the author of Palmyra Pieces and four other books of poetry. Neilson is completing a multi-year residency in the Brooklyn and Queens Public Library systems where she hosts readings and teaches.

Poreform is a design proposal for a new type of water infrastructure that reveals an in-situ desire to capture runoff and flood water for reuse in our country’s thirstiest urban environments. Poreform uses the desert city of Las Vegas to study a scalable urban response to water scarcity and excess. Rapidly compounding water debt, destructive flooding during rainstorms, outmoded infrastructure, and vast tracts of underutilized urban land make Las Vegas the perfect testbed for a new water infrastructure.”

Lecture | Venice, Tenochtitlan and the Construction of a Global Empire
A lecture by Daniel Savoy (Manhattan College).
The classicizing architecture of sixteenth-century Venice has long been thought to express the city’s desire to become a new Rome. A close look at the reception of the New World in contemporary Venetian architectural discourse, however, suggests that Venice’s cultural ambition was not to become one other city, but rather to be seen as an ideal amalgam of many of the world’s cities – past, present, and future – and by extension the nucleus of a divinely pre-ordained global empire. Venetian architectural texts, maps, and travelogues likened Venice to the Aztec city-state of Tenochtitlan, yet condemned the Amerindian capital for its savagery and false religion. Through such distinctions, the Venetians absorbed the New World into their idealizing multicultural image, strengthening their bid to regain power on the world stage following their crippling defeat in the War of the League of Cambrai (1508-16).

Film | A Tribute to the Late German Filmmaker Thomas Harlan
This evening will be dedicated to the late filmmaker, writer, and political activist Thomas Harlan, one of the most controversial figures in postwar Germany. Harlan's political activism spans from the persecution of leading Nazi-criminals in the Federal Republic of Germany to his support for the Chilean resistance against Pinochet. His artistic practice, inextricably entangled with his political work, encompasses the fields of literature, theater, and film.
This event will screen one of Harlan's three major filmic works: Wundkanal. Hinrichtung in vier Stimmen, an interrogation of SS-mass murderer Alfred Filbert; Torre Bela, a documentary on the Carnation Revolution in Portugal; or Souvenance, a film on the Haitian myth of the return of Emperor Jacques I., who declared Haiti's independence in 1804 and was assassinated two years later. The film will be in German with English subtitles. A moderated discussion will follow the screening.
