7.5 miles at a moderate pace. Terrain: Level, rock-strewn trails with mild hills. Paralleling Pine Meadow Brook, cross over near the turbulent cascade. Further on, lunch on a rock shelf at the banks of Lake Sebago. Dutch Doc Trail Shelter and Claudius Smith Cave are sights along the route to Tuxedo. Bring lunch and water. CALL FOR HIKE STATUS.

Performance | Performance Art: Rafael Sanchez's The Limit as the Body Approaches Zero


Rafael Sanchez, winner of the 2008 Ida Applebroog Award, will present a series of new performance pieces and documentation from the past ten years of his work in the ground floor project space. Sanchez'’s performances often bridge the spectacle of street life with the meditative interiority of private rituals. During this exhibition, the artist will stage performances that provoke questions about issues as diverse as masculinity, sexuality, gentrification, and bodily limits.

Native directors capture the spirit of the exhibition Hide: Skin as Material and Metaphor. Gesture Down (I Don't Sing) (2006, 10 min.) The filmmaker shares a poetic and personal reflection of his journey south from California to Mexico in search of the “last” traditional Kumeyaay singer. The work was inspired by James Welch’s poem, “Gesture Down to Guatemala.” Good Looking (2007, 21 min.) A struggling young actor finally lands a role. Unfortunately, it’s as a bimbo in a zombie film. Now she must decide: take the part or maintain her self-respect? My Métis Grandmother (2008, 30 min.) All her life, Cecile St. Amant concealed her Métis heritage. Now, her granddaughter, the filmmaker, lovingly begins to lead her to a new way of thinking. Female Rain (2006, 2 min.) In a piece based on a poem by Navajo writer Laura Tohe, the filmmaker expresses her love of the Navajo language. Writing the Land (2007, 8 min.) A celebration of Musqueam elder Larry Grant’s experience of rediscovering the Hunkamenum language and cultural traditions in the cityscape of Vancouver, located on ancestral Musqueam lands.

Opening Reception | Performance Art: Dave Hardy & Siebren Versteeg's Spirit Tours 11


The resident artists use the storefront as studio, exhibition venue and grounds for experimentation; under Hardy and Versteeg’s direction, this will become the site of an ongoing sculptural event. Since its inception, the project has evolved to investigate the notion of the journey, a fancy that continues to disappear from a contemporary experience that creates a demand for and delivers immediacy and consumption. Spirit Tours 11 will generate what the artists call a “bootleg transformative experience” that takes cues from the gray-market economy. Versteeg and Hardy’s residency will begin with a virtual tarot card reading with predictions emanating from an oversized skull. Yes, that’s right. Premonitions that come from the readings will shape the project for the rest of the summer. ***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE 2:00 AM START TIME IS CORRECT***
