Opening Reception | Artist Talk and Opening Reception: It's the Political Economy, Stupid

This is an international group exhibition curated by the Austrian-American team of Oliver Ressler and Gregory Sholette. The title derives from the slogan which in the early 1990s came to define then presidential candidate Bill Clinton’s campaign, “It’s the economy, stupid”. It’s the Political Economy, Stupid brings together a group of artists who focus on the current crisis in a sustained and critical manner. Rather than acquiesce to the current calamity, the artworks, which include videos, photographs, installations, and a commissioned site-specific wall mural, ask whether it is time to push back against the disciplinary dictates of the capitalist logic and, by use of artistic means, launch a rescue of the very notion of the social itself. With artists Linda Bilda, Melanie Gilligan, Alicia Herrero, Olga Kopenkina, Alexandra Lerman, Dread Scott and curators Oliver Ressler and Gregory Sholette. The talk starts at 5pm; the reception starts at 6pm.

Author Reading | Elizabeth Bettina discusses her book It Happened in Italy: Untold Stories of How the People of Italy Defied the Horrors of the Holocaust

While visiting in her family’s village in Campagna, Italy, the author stumbled onto a story of the Jewish people who were in Italy during the Holocaust. She will share how her discovery impelled her to write what she found to be the untold story. The survivors have given her their personal pictures and documents that reveal the story. There are pictures of Jews in Italian concentration camps, praying in a synagogue, playing the guitar and saxophone, and more. These pictures reinforce what the survivors claim, that they were treated with dignity and respect and were not in labor camps or death camps. They reveal the comparison between the German camps and the Italian camps. The author will also present a small segment of the documentary, Italy and the Holocaust: The Hidden Story, which features survivors described in her book.
