Film | Micki Dickoff & Tony Pagano's Documentary Neshoba: The Price of Freedom (2010): A Mississippi Town Faces Up


The story of a Mississippi town still divided about the meaning of justice, 40 years after the murders of civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner. Although Klansmen bragged about what they did in 1964, no one was held accountable until 2005, when the State indicted preacher Edgar Ray Killen, an 80-year-old notorious racist and mastermind of the murders. Through exclusive interviews with Killen, intimate interviews with the victims’ families, and candid interviews with black and white Neshoba County citizens still struggling with their town’s violent past, the film explores whether the prosecution of one unrepentant Klansman constitutes justice and whether healing and reconciliation are possible without telling the unvarnished truth. 87 min.

The Ecstatic Music Festival kicks off with a 7-hour marathon featuring sets by some of the artists appearing later in the festival along with additional performers and a very special headliner TBA. Program highlights include a rare performance of Julius Eastman's Stay On It with Ne(x)tworks; the U.S. premiere of John Matthias, Adrian Corker and Andrew Prior's new work for violin, voice, electric guitar, piano and NeuroSampler, what happens; the second-ever New York performance of Corey Dargel's complete Other People's Love Songs with NOW Ensemble; and the Chiara String Quartet performing Jefferson Friedman's String Quartet No. 3.

Author William Hartung discusses his book with David Eisenhower, the grandson of the 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the son-in-law of the 37th President of the United States Richard Nixon. In "Prophets of War" William Hartung presents the history of the largest military contractor in U.S. history, Lockheed Martin. Mr. Hartung argues that with 25 billion dollars annually in Defense Department contracts, Lockheed Martin's reach into American life is extensive and largely unknown, including creation of satellites used to spy on the phone calls of American citizens. He discusses the company's size, scope and influence with Pierre Sprey, father of the A-10 and F-16 military aircraft.
