Classical Music | Music in the Lobby: Contemporary Compositions by mary Edwards

Mary Edwards is a composer and sound artist whose interdisciplinary practice encompasses themes of temporality, impermanence, nostalgia and the natural world that recur throughout her work. At this concert, she will present a program of original works, including her iterative composition, Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place. The origins of this project began on an Arctic expedition above the 78th Parallel, where she first gathered field recordings of geological/oceanographic activity —vibroacoustic natural events—iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers of the meltwater channel—then reimagined as an ode rather than an elegy. It takes listeners to the outermost space that resembles its earthly NASA Terrestrial Analog Site of the Svalbard Arctic desert, and lands us back down to praise our natural surroundings— right now— in the face of rapid change.
