Discussion | Nazi Hunting: From John Demjanjuk to Richard Spencer (online)

As former Director of the Office of Special Investigations at the U.S. Department of Justice and now as an official in its successor unit, Eli Rosenbaum has spent more than three decades identifying, denaturalizing, and deporting World War II Nazi war criminals—and exposing the hidden Nazi pasts of public figures such as former NASA rocket engineer Arthur Rudolph.  As two members of the team behind Sines v. Kessler, leading litigator Karen Dunn and Integrity First for America Executive Director Amy Spitalnick are currently suing white nationalist Richard Spencer and other neo-Nazis in U.S. federal court. Their lawsuit is seeking to bankrupt and dismantle the hate groups that marched in Charlottesville, Virginia at the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right” rally.  This program explores the successes, challenges, and consequences of Nazi-hunting past and present with Rosenbaum, Dunn, and Spitalnick. The discussion will be moderated by Jami Floyd, New York Public Radio.

Opening Reception | Closed / Locked: The City During the Pandemic

For those that remained in New York City in the early spring of 2020, it was like inhabiting a ghost town. Street life evaporated and daily life took place almost exclusively indoors. Relief from the deafening silence came only in the form of all too frequent sirens both close and far away. Talking heads now appeared from their living rooms, eager to reassure us with nightly updates on hand washing and disinfectants. The news was a lifeline, a mirror, and a means to either instigate or dispel rumor as imaginations ran wild in a moment of fear. Meanwhile outside, the silence of the streets seemed to mock society's confidence in its own inevitability. Walking through abandoned streets, Muntadas photographed the many “closed” signs found in storefronts nearby. With little precedent to rely on, the signs left the most pressing question (“for how long?”) unanswered. Also documenting the ubiquitous plywood cladding turned billboard for graffiti and political speech, the resulting images were collated into a newspaper format and accompanied by excerpts from Beatriz Colomina’s text on the profound effects of Covid on life in the city.

Discussion | Upending Enforcement to Impact Immigration System Reform (online)

The term “crimmigation” has gained popularity as a way to describe the merging of the criminal and immigration system in the U.S. In contrast to the traditional approach prevalent throughout the majority of U.S. history, recent developments in the use of immigrant detention has changed the face of the immigration system altogether. The increasing criminalization of immigration has sparked some foundational questions: Is it possible to imagine a system of immigration not based on enforcement, or is enforcement a necessary feature? To what extent? And if we can imagine that this is not the case, what would such an immigration system resemble? This panel will act as a space to pose difficult questions and open up the floor for imagining new possibilities.

Performance | Sounding Board: Scenes from Domestic Life (online)

Known for her critically acclaimed paintings, Tschabalala Self will present her first live performance in the form of brief scenes from a play that she has written and directed. Taking place on a stage designed by the artist as a sculpture that closely resembles her collage-paintings, a male and female actor will perform scenes of dialogue using humor and exaggerated sincerity in a conversation that ranges from literal to nonsensical, to explore emotional communication, gender roles and power play within intimate relationships. A Boney M cover band will perform some of their greatest hits to emphasize moments of the staged drama, akin to a chorus in a Greek play. The sculpture-esque stage--set in the amphitheater bandstand of Jackie Robinson Park in Central Harlem--will be designed and painted by Self, using the brightly colored geometry of her paintings. Self will design costumes and footwear for the performers, who appear to step out of her paintings onto the stage, bringing the domestic scenes she depicts in her canvases to life.
