Discussion | Meaningful Transformation of the Immigration Enforcement System (online)

The US Immigration system is subject to a variety of claims, including allegations of racial profiling and racial exclusion based on foundational laws like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882; the identification of particular events such as the September 11th attacks as transformative influences on the American immigration system; and newer claims that the Trump administration has inaugurated a cruel chapter in the history of immigration policy in the US. The majority of these claims do not reflect positively on the system currently in existence, and a general consensus is that the US immigration system is ‘broken’, to use some of the most common language. But what does this actually mean? How is it broken? Precisely what is broken and why? What principles and values should the immigration system seek to uphold, that it is failing to? Is this failure procedural or structural? And perhaps most important, what changes are necessary for meaningful transformation of immigration enforcement? This panel will start a conversation around these questions, in order to help us engage deeply with the critiques we see today.

Discussion | Breaking Barriers: Redesigning High School for All Students with Columbia University Professor (online)

Despite visions of an American Dream where grit and determination equal success, today a child's zip code is a better predictor of success than any amount of hard work or talent. That's what inspired Stanley Litow to create P-Tech (Pathways in Technology Early College High School), a public education reform model focused on college attainment and career readiness. P-Tech schools span grades 9-14 and enable students to earn both a high school diploma and a no-cost, two-year postsecondary degree in a STEM field. Started ten years ago in one school in a low-income Brooklyn neighborhood, P-Tech now operates in 240 schools across 12 states and 28 countries. Columbia University Professor Stanley Litow speaks with former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and P-Tech founding principal Rashid Ferrod Davis.

Discussion | Hoodwinked in the Hothouse: Examining False Corporate Schemes Being Advanced Through the Paris Agreement (online)

From Net Zero Emissions and Carbon Capture to Nature-based Solutions, a number of neoliberal policy agendas and unproven, corporate techno-fixes continue to subsidize the expansion of fossil fuel industries, while further impacting communities on the frontlines of climate chaos. As we head into the UN Climate Conference’ COP 26, where the implementation of the Paris Agreement will be negotiated, climate justice advocacy groups and social movements are faced with overcoming a complex array of these false climate schemes, in order to force lawmakers towards a Just Transition framework for tackling this crisis. An international panel of climate justice organizers and frontline community leaders will have a discussion about the multi-billion dollar climate investments being promoted by fossil fuel industries and other disaster capitalists at various NY Climate Week venues over the next few days.

Discussion | Ground Zero: The Cultural Component (online)

Two design competitions determined the direction of the master plan at Ground Zero and the concept and position of the 9/11 memorial and museum. Less clear in their functions, locations, and funding were other cultural institutions awarded a potential place on the site. Yet, as this program will discuss, the cultural component was a key idea to both the rebuilding at Ground Zero and the recovery of lower Manhattan. Moderator for the panel is Gary Hack, an architect, planner, and academic who consulted for Studio Libeskind from the winning urban design competition through the preparation of the master plan and urban design guidelines.
