Performance | Antigone in Ferguson: Sophocles and Choral Music

Antigone in Ferguson was conceived in the wake of Michael Brown’s death in 2014, through a collaboration between Theater of War Productions and community members from Ferguson, Missouri. Translated and directed by Bryan Doerries and composed by Phil Woodmore, the project fuses a dramatic reading by leading actors of excerpts from Sophocles’s Greek tragedy with live choral music performed by a choir of activists, police officers, youth, and concerned citizens from Ferguson and New York City. The performance is the catalyst for panel and audience-driven discussions on race and social justice, the core component of the event. This multifaceted production will offer a glimpse not only into the effects of the tragedy in Brown’s local community, but also the trauma of police violence and racial injustice in communities of color in New York and across the nation. Local stakeholders and community leaders will participate as panelists, assisting in opening up dialogues with audiences. These guided discussions, which aim to promote healing and bridge the growing divide between law enforcement and local communities, will focus on the impact of racialized violence against communities of color, and the legacies of the tragic deaths of Michael Brown, as well as Eric Garner, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Saheed Vassell, and numerous other victims. The presentation will feature a rotating roster of acclaimed actors, including Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale), who will reprise the role she portrayed in the premiere of Antigone in Ferguson presented on the stage of Michael Brown’s high school in Ferguson in 2016. Other cast members include: Paul Giamatti (Billions), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave), Frankie Faison (The Wire) and Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent). Dance Performance | 3 Site-Specific Dance Acts in the Heart of the City

This event is three site-specific commissions by luciana achugar, Laurie Berg, and Full Circle Souljahs (Ana "Rokafella" Garcia & Gabriel "Kwikstep" Dionisio). The artists will explore strategies for perception, amplification, and activism within the cacophonous landscape of the city. In New Mass Dance, achugar creates a site-specific procession inspired by the New Dance Group, a 1930s modern dance collective that taught classes near Times Square promoting social change through movement. In scape, Berg overlays a landscape of information over live performance via 3-D glasses, exploring Times Square as not just a place of spectacle and traffic but of visual messaging. Full Circle Souljahs' Behind the Groove is an homage to street and club dance trends from the '70s to today, giving visibility to an underground dance community long associated with Times Square. These three new works will be presented back-to-back so that audience goers can experience all three works on one evening or over the course of the weekend. 6pm: Laurie Berg 7pm: luciana achugar 8pm: Full Circle Souljahs Thursday - Sunday, September 20 though September 23, 2018.

Performance | A Beautiful Ending: A Poignant Meditation on Loss

In this poignant, sometimes humorous, and personal meditation on loss, writer and director Mohamed El Khatib reconstructs a written diary of sorts around the death of his mother in February 2012. Combining this autobiographical narrative with fictional elements, El Khatib fabricates a fragile reality constructed through the debris— interviews, emails, texts, documents, and additional sources—of his relationship with his mother. With the audience seated in close proximity to El Khatib, the solo performance takes the shape of an intimate confession or artistic testimony transmuted directly to the viewers. A Beautiful Ending was created in collaboration with Fred Hocké and Nicolas Jorio and received the 2016 Grand Prix de Littérature dramatique from ARTCENA.

David Geselson and his company Compagnie Lieux-Dits stage a participatory theatrical experience, drawing on the power of memory, love, loss, and regret. Over the course of a full day, Geselson will individually meet with several people and ask them to describe a letter that they wish they had written to a loved one but never completed. Geselson will then compose a letter on behalf of each person, and with permission, Compagnie Lieux-Dits will present a work based on the approved epistles during an evening presentation. First produced at Théâtre de la Bastille in April 2016, this ongoing project has, according to Geselson, “bridged the gap between theater practitioners and their audience and transformed the theater into a shared space where these two worlds can meet and talk.”
