Staged Reading | Shakespeare for Everyone: Henry IV, Part II

Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part II focus on Prince Hal's journey toward kingship, and his ultimate rejection of Falstaff. However, unlike Part One, Hal's and Falstaff's stories are almost entirely separate, as the two characters meet only twice and very briefly. The tone of much of the play is elegiac, focusing on Falstaff's age and his closeness to death, which parallels that of the increasingly sick king. The Instant Shakespeare readings are set up to make Shakespeare accessible. The readings are usually without rehearsal, but they are on-your-feet Instant staged readings where the actors move around as much as they feel comfortable.

Lecture | Godless Secularism: Europe, India and Religion

Since the 1980s it has become commonplace to talk about the global return of religion and the consequent crisis of secularism. Faisal Devji, St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, argues the opposite: The waning and not revival of religion in its metaphysical aspect puts into question our ideas of modernity. What does this crisis of religion look like in Europe, and does its Indian history have anything to teach us about our present?

Performance | Antigone in Ferguson: Sophocles and Choral Music

Antigone in Ferguson was conceived in the wake of Michael Brown’s death in 2014, through a collaboration between Theater of War Productions and community members from Ferguson, Missouri. Translated and directed by Bryan Doerries and composed by Phil Woodmore, the project fuses a dramatic reading by leading actors of excerpts from Sophocles’s Greek tragedy with live choral music performed by a choir of activists, police officers, youth, and concerned citizens from Ferguson and New York City. The performance is the catalyst for panel and audience-driven discussions on race and social justice, the core component of the event. This multifaceted production will offer a glimpse not only into the effects of the tragedy in Brown’s local community, but also the trauma of police violence and racial injustice in communities of color in New York and across the nation. Local stakeholders and community leaders will participate as panelists, assisting in opening up dialogues with audiences. These guided discussions, which aim to promote healing and bridge the growing divide between law enforcement and local communities, will focus on the impact of racialized violence against communities of color, and the legacies of the tragic deaths of Michael Brown, as well as Eric Garner, Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell, Saheed Vassell, and numerous other victims. The presentation will feature a rotating roster of acclaimed actors, including Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale), who will reprise the role she portrayed in the premiere of Antigone in Ferguson presented on the stage of Michael Brown’s high school in Ferguson in 2016. Other cast members include: Paul Giamatti (Billions), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU), David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave), Frankie Faison (The Wire) and Kathryn Erbe (Law & Order: Criminal Intent). Concert | Gran Pianola Project II: Commissioned Works

Music of the Americas presents five new commissioned works for Disklavier piano and acoustic instruments inspired by the music of Conlon Nancarrow. The commissioned composers—Tatiana Catanzaro, Kyle Gann, Jaime E. Oliver La Rosa, Carlos Sandoval, and Sabrina Schroeder—are all active in the United States and Europe. Two of them (Gann and Sandoval) worked directly with Nancarrow and have conducted extensive research on his music. For the creation of these new pieces, the composers have taken Nancarrow’s music for player piano as a point of departure, combining automatic and human-powered instruments. The Yamaha Disklavier, a modern descendant of the player piano, serves as the common thread between all the pieces. The practice of transcribing Nancarrow’s music for newer automatic instruments and live instrumentalists began decades ago and involved Nancarrow himself on several occasions. It is this rich space of interaction between live performers and the automatic piano, an instrument that performs without a live musician yet retains the physicality of a piano, that constitutes the focus of this project.

Opening Reception | Prepositions All the Way Down: A Surreal Visual World

Oh, how we speak to the creaturely! In Kricket Lane's surreal visual world, it's in a series of half-Imperative, partly-cooing ask-commands: sculptural portmanteaus of nature- and human-made, inspired by her love for and interactions with her dog. Human-to-animal being intra-relations have long been fodder for thought. Jacques Derrida considered his nude self before his cat, Donna Haraway probes the bonds of our canine companions’ “significant otherness,” and Hélène Cixous’ poor, noble dog Fips became zoomorphically emblematic for the wounds of colonialism and anti-Semitism.

Screening | An Evening with Experimenta India: Short Films

An evening of historical and contemporary experimental short films from India curated by filmmakers Shai Heredia and Shumona Goel. Despite a long and internationally celebrated cinematic tradition, the Indian avant-garde is much lesser known to American audiences than the many canonical works of its feature-length cinema. These films by Pramod Pati, Ruchir Joshi, SNS Sastry, and Goel & Heredia offer a small window onto India’s extensive and eclectic avant-garde cinematic landscape, while also connecting to themes explored in Ganesh’s exhibition, such as the organization of the self in relation to the organization of the city, and others.
