Book Discussion | Laughing All the Way to Freedom: The Americanization of a Russian Emigre

All immigrants of the world coming to America expect it to be like their home country—only better. What they rarely consider is that, like that of any other nation, America’s DNA differs from that of their country. It may take a lifetime to adjust to the unfamiliar country’s culture, mentality, and way of doing many things differently from the way they have known. It is especially true when immigrants come to America from a country based on different principles, in this case, collectivist Russia versus individualist America, with opposing political systems—the democratic American one and the totalitarian Soviet. Emil Draitser's book is part memoir and part cultural study about the challenges of immigration and American acculturation. With self-deprecating humor, the author, a former Soviet satirist who was punished for trespassing the boundaries of public criticism, recollects his growing pains as he overcame his indoctrinated upbringing in a totalitarian society to embrace America’s defining values.

Book Club | The Sicilian Inheritance by Jo Piazza

Sara Marsala barely knows who she is anymore after the failure of her business and marriage. On top of that, her beloved great-aunt Rosie passes away, leaving Sara bereft with grief. But Aunt Rosie’s death also opens an escape from her life and a window into the past by way of a plane ticket to Sicily, a deed to a possibly valuable plot of land, and a bombshell family secret. Rosie believes Sara’s great-grandmother Serafina, the family matriarch who was left behind while her husband worked in America, didn’t die of illness as family lore has it . . . she was murdered. Thus begins a twist-filled adventure that takes Sara all over the picturesque Italian countryside as she races to solve a mystery and learn the story of Serafina—a feisty and headstrong young woman in the early 1900s thrust into motherhood in her teens, who fought for a better life not just for herself but for all the women of her small village. Unsurprisingly the more she challenges the status quo, the more she finds herself in danger. As Sara discovers more about Serafina, she also realizes she is coming head-to-head with the same menacing forces that took down her great-grandmother.

Lecture | The Modern Concrete Skyscraper: One Shell Plaza, Houston (online)

Travel to Texas where, at the time of its completion in 1971, One Shell Plaza in Houston was the tallest reinforced concrete structure in the world. Designed by SOM's extraordinary collaborators, architect Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Khan, working for the developer Gerald D. Hines, the 50-story skyscraper continued the evolution of Khan's “tube-in-tube” structure they had pioneered in Chicago in the mid-1960s. Colaco, who as a young engineer worked directly with Khan on One Shell Plaza and other projects, will discuss the engineering principles and refinements that make this skyscraper so expressive as both form and structure. Speaker Joseph Colaco received his Ph.D. in structural engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1965, the same year he began to work in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill under the firm's lead engineering partner Fazlur Khan.

Screening | Political Advertisement 1952-2024: Screening and Panel

Artists Muntadas and Reese will premiere the 11th edition of their four-decade long collaboration, Political Advertisement 1952-2024, followed by a conversation with Brooke Gladstone, host of WNYC’s Peabody Award-winning podcast On The Media. For 40 years, Antoni Muntadas and Marshall Reese have been compiling a video history of presidential campaign spots that follows the evolution of broadcast political advertising from its beginnings in 1952 to the present. When the artists started this project in 1984, finding broadcast political ads required exhaustive research in archives and often involved personal contact with the candidate’s campaigns, a bit more complicated than today’s internet click and download. The feature length film is a personal vision of how politics and politicians are shaped and presented through the moving image. This engaging critique without voiceover commentary highlights how campaign ads manipulate public perception and affect voter behavior. The experience is an historical stream of consciousness showcasing the political and technological histories of presidential candidates and the broadcast moving image.

Discussion | Antisemitism as a Pillar of Fascism

Hitler's attempt to seize control of the German state and eradicate Weimar democracy in 1923's beer hall putsch failed and landed him in jail. Hitler used his imprisonment to raise his political profile and write Mein Kampf, his antisemitic and antidemocratic screed. There has been much discussion in our times about political movements centered around personality cults and disillusionment with democracy. While no such movement has succeeded in dismantling democracy in the United States, some have have pointed out that the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 matches up historically with the failed putsch of 1923 as a premature grasping for power by a movement that might still prevail. With: -- Historian Gavriel Rosenfeld, author of The Fourth Reich: The Specter of Nazism from WWII to the Present. --John Ganz, author of When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s

Book Discussion | What If We Get It Right? by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (In Person AND Online!)

Despite the genuinely dire warnings about climate change, Ayana Elizabeth Johnson believes that our future is not yet written. In her new book, What If We Get It Right, Johnson guides readers through solutions and possibilities at the nexus of science, policy, culture, and justice. In addition to her original essays, she seeks wisdom from an array of visionary farmers, financiers, architects, and advocates who are able to conjure images of a flourishing future. Mixing poetry, data, and art, Johnson demonstrates a multiplicity of futures that are worth the effort they will take—and discusses how we can each play a role in helping all of us get there.
