Opera | Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri

New York Opera Forum performs  the complete opera of L'Italiana in Algeri by Gioachino Rossini. A live musical recital performed in concert with piano accompaniment. L'Italiana in Algeri, (The Italian Girl in Algiers) is an operatic dramma giocoso in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Angelo Anelli, based on his earlier text set by Luigi Mosca. It premiered at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice on 22 May 1813. The music is characteristic of Rossini's style, remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies. The musical program is cosponsored with New York Opera Forum which was founded by Richard Nechamkin in 1983 to give classically trained singers the opportunity to learn and perform standard operatic repertoire in the original languages.

Staged Reading | The Second Part of Henry the Fourth

A staged reading of Henry IV by The Instant Shakespeare Company.  Henry IV, Part 2 is a history play by William Shakespeare believed to have been written between 1596 and 1599. It is the third part of a tetralogy, preceded by Richard II and Henry IV, Part 1 and succeeded by Henry V. The play is often seen as an extension of aspects of Henry IV, Part 1, rather than a straightforward continuation of the historical narrative, placing more emphasis on the highly popular character of Falstaff and introducing other comic figures as part of his entourage, including Ancient Pistol, Doll Tearsheet, and Justice Robert Shallow. Several scenes specifically parallel episodes in Part 1. The Instant Shakespeare Company is dedicated to the proposition that Shakespeare is for everyone!

Discussion | Turning Towards a Radical Listening: How Our Lives Are Shaped by Language

In Turning Towards a Radical Listening, James Allister Sprang will develop a sculptural sound-based installation over the course of a five-week residency. The project begins with a series of conversations between Sprang and poets M. NourbeSe Philip, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, and Tracie Morris considering how our lives are shaped (if not, in a sense, programmed) by language. These conversations will be recorded, with the resulting files featured in Sprang's live performances as the artist runs them through voice-to-text software and other applications to highlight--and potentially to make new meaning from--algorithmic alterations and glitches. M. NourbeSe Philip: Saturday, October 5, 4pm Rachel Eliza Griffiths: Wednesday, October 9, 7pm Tracie Morris: Saturday, October 12, 4pm

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Memento

The paintings of Andrew Dykes reinterpret iconic portraits of great stars who struggled with self-destruction and in many cases were overpowered by it to the point of death. There is irony in the contrast between the resilient, creative self-invention (and re-invention) of artists and the way in which, after death, their images are re-interpreted as symbols of a latent tragedy.
