Classical Music | Bach at Noon

The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 10, 2019 to May 20, 2020.

Lecture | Andy Warhol’s Index (Book)

Just in time for the holiday shopping season of 1967, Random House published Andy Warhol’s Index (Book). It came in a hologram cover with Campbell’s Tomato Juice endpapers, several 3-D pop-ups, and a flexi disc donning Lou Reed’s portrait. For counterculture bibliophiles, there was a deluxe edition, tinfoil-bound. The process by which Warhol’s book came together was so complex—and unusual—the publisher recounted it in an internal memo that was itself written like a children’s book. Through documents in the Random House records held at the Rare Book & Manuscript Library and interviews with Warhol’s collaborators, art historian Lucy Mulroney sheds new light on this iconic twentieth-century artist’s lifelong interest in publishing. Speaker: Lucy Mulroney, Associate Director for Collections, Research, and Education, Beinecke Library, Yale University

One of the so-called brown babies of the Windrush generation, born to a Jamaican father and Welsh mother, Carby's place in her home, her neighbourhood, and her country of birth was always in doubt. Emerging from this setting, Carby untangles the threads connecting members of her family to each other in a web woven by the British Empire across the Atlantic.

Discussion | Turning Towards a Radical Listening: How Our Lives Are Shaped by Language

In Turning Towards a Radical Listening, James Allister Sprang will develop a sculptural sound-based installation over the course of a five-week residency. The project begins with a series of conversations between Sprang and poets M. NourbeSe Philip, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, and Tracie Morris considering how our lives are shaped (if not, in a sense, programmed) by language.  These conversations will be recorded, with the resulting files featured in Sprang’s live performances as the artist runs them through voice-to-text software and other applications to highlight—and potentially to make new meaning from—algorithmic alterations and glitches. M. NourbeSe Philip: Saturday, October 5, 4pm Rachel Eliza Griffiths: Wednesday, October 9, 7pm Tracie Morris: Saturday, October 12, 4pm

Author Reading | Writers of the Appalachian Renaissance

Meet three writers with deep associations to West Virginia and the Appalachian region. They include the Poet Laureate of West Virginia and the granddaughter of a witness to one of the greatest mine disasters of the twentieth century. They will be reading from their latest books and leading a discussion covering how the region has been damaged both by extractors of natural resources and by humiliating and misleading stereotypes of hillbillies and incest. These writers represent a generation that claims its right to use Appalachian folkways and an Appalachian world view to comment on history, society, and culture at large.
