Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” This tour repeats every Monday.

When death haunts a high school in a small town in the late 1990s, everyone is forever transformed. The snow-covered streets, the school’s hallways and lockers are preserved as in a dream.  94 min.

Book Discussion | On Sex, Race, Nation, Humanity: Reading Derrida’s Geschlecht III

This event focuses on a recently discovered text by the late Franco-Algerian philosopher Jacques Derrida. Geschlecht III, rediscovered in the Derrida archive and newly forthcoming in English, is the “missing” installment in Derrida’s four-part series on Martin Heidegger and the German word Geschlecht (meaning, among other things, “sex,” “race,” and “species”). Geschlecht III presents us with one of Derrida’s most sustained engagements with Martin Heidegger, in which Derrida tracks a subtle but powerful nationalistic undercurrent in Heidegger’s thought. With: -- Katie Chenoweth (Princeton University) is one of the co-editors of Geschlecht III in French (Seuil, 2018) and co-translator of the English edition (Chicago, forthcoming 2020). -- Rodrigo Therezo (University of Freiburg) is the author of the preface to Geschlecht III. He is co-editor of the French edition and co-translator of the forthcoming English edition. -- David Wills (Brown University) is the author of many books, most recently Killing Times: The Temporal Technology of the Death Penalty (Fordham, 2019). He is one of the foremost translators of Derrida’s work into English. -- Moderated by Emily Apter, Professor, Department of French Literature, Thought, and Culture, and Chair of Department of Comparative Literature.. In English

Opening Reception | Projeto Chernobyl: Contamination Made Visible

This exhibition presents Alice Miceli's series of 30 radiographs produced in 2006-2010. Miceli developed a method of image making to document the enduring effects of the Soviet nuclear plant explosion of April 26, 1986. Though gamma radiation continues to be present and to cause health problems and deaths in the area, it is invisible to the naked eye and to traditional methods of photography that have been used to document the region's ruins. With Projeto Chernobyl, Miceli made this contamination visible via direct contact between the radiation and film, which was exposed in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone for months at a time. Both technically and conceptually complex, Miceli's work questions our ideas of vision, memory, politics, and environmental issues.

Lecture | Disorder Under Heaven: Considering a Radical Reorganization

Slavoj Žižek talks about a radical reorganization of our entire food production and distribution—so how to do it? Is it not clear that a strong global agency is needed with the power to coordinate such measures? And is not such an agency pointing in the direction of what we once called “Communism”? And does the same not hold for other threats to our survival as humans? Is a similar global agency not needed also to deal with the problem of increasing numbers of refugees and immigrants, with the problem of digital control over our lives? Let’s not be afraid to tackle the problem of the new order that the ongoing disorder is calling for. Speaker Slavoj Žižek is a senior researcher at the Institute of Sociology, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a visiting professor at a number of American Universities .

Talk | Between the Mexican Renaissance and the Harlem Renaissance

100 years after the Harlem Renaissance was born, cartoonist Rafael Barajas “El Fisgón” shares a captivating visual presentation about the legacy of Mexican caricaturist Miguel Covarrubias, whose book Negro Drawings is considered a classic collection of sketches from the vast social movement. Barajas will dissect the profound cultural turmoil of the early 20th century, which questioned most of the Ancien Régime’s social, artistic, intellectual and scientific paradigms. For Mexico, this time translated into a complex social revolution, which led to what local historians call the Mexican Renaissance and turned Mexico City into a significant artistic hub. Simultaneously, African American figures such as Langston Hughes and Louis Armstrong transformed the Harlem neighborhood into a black cultural mecca. This fascinating talk will closely examine how Covarrubias left a significant mark in both movements and will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Screening | The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!: A Filmed Talk

A public screening of a talk by the revolutionary leader Bob Avakian which soberly confronts this unprecedented situation. Fascism in America? Avakian makes the case, as no one else has, that this is in fact a fascist regime--with deep roots in the history of this country, and its role in the world. And he argues for what’s needed in the face of this. Not passively relying on the Democrats pursuing impeachment, or waiting for the 2020 elections. But people stepping outside the bounds of normal politics—taking to the streets in their thousands and millions to drive this regime from power like in Puerto Rico and Hong Kong. Bob Avakian is the leader of the revolution and architect of the new communism. He has spent decades analyzing the particular role of the rise of fascism and Christian Fundamentalism in the US.
