Opening Reception | If nothing lasts forever, will you be my nothing?: Paintings by Linnea Vedder

Linnea Vedder's recent paintings depict pregnancy, engaging the longstanding analogy between birth and creative genesis (see, for instance, Courbet's L'Origine du monde). Vedder takes up art's classical themes, engaging layering as both process and historical or conceptual content: gravid bodies are overlaid with semi-sheer floral patterns—signifying growth as well as interior decoration—or ensnared in an grid of broad, dark brushstrokes.

Already while in the USSR, she took an active part in the "Sojuz Kompositorov" society for contemporary music, giving first performances of several new works. While in the USSR, she often performed as soloist with top-level chamber orchestras ("Moscow Virtuosos", "Moscow Soloists") and with several symphony orchestras. She also worked as a soloist of the Odessa Philharmonia, and as the First Violin of the Odessa Conservatory Quartet.
