Festival | Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos

A variety of events and workshops will be offered. Day of the Dead has been one of Mexico’s most important festivals since pre-Hispanic times. It is a time for families to gather and welcome the souls of the dead on their annual visit home. Cempasúchil (marigold) flowers, burning copal incense, fresh pan de muerto bread, candles, sugar skulls, photographs and mementos of the departed adorn special altars. In Mexico, Day of the Dead is celebrated over an entire week with the preparation of altars, foods, dance, music and special offerings for people who have died. Mano a Mano recreates the magical space of a village churchyard during the celebration and has organized a series of events including altar building, workshops, dance, poetry and music.

Screening | Video/photography/documentary project in Mexico called “Las muertes chiquitas/The Little Deaths

Mireia Sallarès is a Catalan artist who developed a video/photography/documentary project in Mexico called "Las muertes chiquitas/The Little Deaths." For this project, Ms. Sallarès traveled to a number of cities in Mexico exploring the topics of pleasure and pain, violence and death, from the perspective of women, through filmed interviews and still photographs. The project has been very successful in Mexico. During its run, many round tables and meetings and interventions took place, in which women continued to express themselves in response to the work. This continuing social and dynamic aspect of the project keeps it compelling. The artist is currently composing an update on the project in light of these public interventions, which will be incorporated into the New York stage. In Spanish with English subtitles. Las Muertes Chiquitas is a 5 hour documentary that has been divided in two parts to facilitate viewing. Photographs | Book| Trailer of the documentary

Opening Reception | Mika Rottenberg's latest work Squeeze

Mika Rottenberg's latest work Squeeze continues the artist's inquiry into the mechanisms by which value is generated, considering the logistics of global outsourcing and the alchemy of art production. Through moviemagic portals Rottenberg links video of her Harlem studio stage set to on-location footage of an iceberg lettuce arm in Arizona and a rubber plant in Kerala, India. This composite factory toils ceaselessly to create a single precious object, one small sculpture. The video is presented in a custom-made theater. The sculpture is inaccessible - preserved offshore, out of reach for public or private viewing. Mika Rottenberg was born in Buenos Aires in 1976, and holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts (2000) and an MFA from Columbia University (2004). She lives and works in New York.
