Symposium | 2010 New York Sanjo Festival and Symposium

Sanjo’s origin is in the music of the Korean indigenous shaman culture that is filled with Korean spirit and sentiment. Koreans strongly identify with this music which grew to be the greatest instrumental genre of the 19th century. This genre adopted elements and stylistic features from the court and folk music traditions, and has come to reflect a "pan-musical" style that is quintessentially Korean. As solo instrumental music, Sanjo offers many opportunities for dazzling virtuosic display in the course of its multi-movement form. The soloist interacts with rhythmic accompaniment given by the janggo, the traditional hourglass-shaped, double-headed drum. At the 2010 Festival and Symposium, Sanjo shares the international stage with the American jazz/blues tradition and modal systems such as Indian raga and Turkish maqam. A wide range of lectures by scholars of the music will also be given. Sanjo Master Performances will feature Master Baek In-Young, Master Weon Jang-Hyeon, Master Kim Yeong-Gil, Master Hong Ok- Mi, and Master Kim Gyu-Heyong.

Cempasúchil (marigold) flowers, burning copal incense, fresh pan de muerto bread, candles, sugar skulls, photographs and mementos of the departed adorn special altars. In Mexico, Day of the Dead is celebrated over an entire week with the preparation of altars, foods, dance, music and special offerings for people who have died. Opening Reception | New Photographs by Elad Lassry

This exhibition will feature photographs as well as unique works, and will also debut a 35mm film. Throughout his oeuvre, Lassry is persistent in his exploration of the status of the picture in the 21st century. His visually complex pictures are at once present and elusive, familiar and alien. Lassry investigates the opposing pictorial realms of the analog and the digital to create a tension that unfolds within the photographic space. Lassry (b.1977, Tel Aviv, Israel) has exhibited extensively in major international institutions and solo exhibitions of his work were recently presented at Kunsthalle Zurich, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and The Art Institute of Chicago. His first major monographic exhibition in the United States, Elad Lassry: Sum of Limited Views, is currently on view at the Contemporary Art Museum of Saint Louis. Preceded by a book signing beginning at 4pm.

Opening Reception | Photography: James Casebere's House

Casebere was born in 1953, in East Lansing, Michigan. His pioneering work has established him at the forefront of artists working with constructed photography. For the last thirty years, Casebere has devised increasingly complex models that are subsequently photographed in his studio. Based on architectural, art historical and cinematic sources, his table-sized constructions are made of simple materials, pared down to essential forms. Casebere's abandoned spaces are hauntingly evocative and oftentimes suggestive of prior events, encouraging the viewer to reconstitute a narrative or symbolic reading of his work.

Concert | A Concert Version of Matt Schickele's Opera Marymere

In 1888 an odd, quiet man named John Sargent moved from Maine to Wyoming with his business partner and his family. Within a few years he was penniless and alone: he was suspected of murdering both wife and partner, and his children had been removed from his care. He left. Later John Sargent returned to Jackson's Hole with a new bride. Edith enjoyed sunbathing nude, sitting in trees, and playing violin. Often all at once. This strange couple's brief, troubled time in the shadow of the Teton mountains is the subject of the new chamber opera Marymere. The story centers on Edith Sargent and her struggle to live in an unfamiliar place with a sad, possibly dangerous man.
