Symposium | 2010 New York Sanjo Festival and Symposium

Sanjo’s origin is in the music of the Korean indigenous shaman culture that is filled with Korean spirit and sentiment. Koreans strongly identify with this music which grew to be the greatest instrumental genre of the 19th century. This genre adopted elements and stylistic features from the court and folk music traditions, and has come to reflect a "pan-musical" style that is quintessentially Korean. As solo instrumental music, Sanjo offers many opportunities for dazzling virtuosic display in the course of its multi-movement form. The soloist interacts with rhythmic accompaniment given by the janggo, the traditional hourglass-shaped, double-headed drum. At the 2010 Festival and Symposium, Sanjo shares the international stage with the American jazz/blues tradition and modal systems such as Indian raga and Turkish maqam. A wide range of lectures by scholars of the music will also be given. Sanjo Master Performances will feature Master Baek In-Young, Master Weon Jang-Hyeon, Master Kim Yeong-Gil, Master Hong Ok- Mi, and Master Kim Gyu-Heyong.

Talk | Artist Stanya Kahn talks about her work

Kahn is widely known for her performance and films produced with former collaborative partner Harry Dodge. Their artistic partnership bore them major representation, with several features in the 2008 Whitney Biennial as well as a showcase in a “California Video” retrospective at the Getty Museum not long afterwards. Humor for them is the mask for more philosophical ideas, whether it’s an exploration of mind/body duality, the perils of social conformity, or the struggle of one individual to connect with another. In her first solo show since parting with Dodge last April, Kahn continues to tread the line between comedy and tragedy in the filmic medium. Most recently she was featured in the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art.

No official will lawlessly take away the surplus" (shogunal statute, 1649). Lecture | A Brief History of Erotohistoriography

With Elizabeth Freeman of UC Davis. Proposing the body as site of historical encounter–in and across time—Elizabeth Freeman traces a history of carnal historiographical practices that she calls “erotohistoriography.” Within this paradigm, it is possible to imagine historical consciousness in terms of pleasure. From medieval relic worship through Romantic-era sympathetic historiography through a re-evaluation of Modernist “shock,” Freeman examines the discredited and disavowed role of enjoyable physical sensation, even sexual pleasure, involved in specific methods of accounting for the past.
