Lecture | The Plume: Architecture Under a Cloud

Christopher Hawthorne will discuss the prospects for architecture-and architecture criticism-in an era of economic uncertainty and ecological upheaval. How can architecture maintain its relevance in a culture drained of capital for new construction, and facing new environmental catastrophes on a depressingly regular basis? And how should architecture critics react to these new realities? Part of the answer lies in renovating some old or overlooked concepts in architecture and criticism, including the vacant, the temporary and the slightly worn. Hawthorne is architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times, where he writes about new and old buildings, sustainability, planning, transit and the lives of cities. He was previously architecture critic for Slate. His writing has also appeared in The New Yorker, New York Magazine, The Washington Post, Domus, Volume, Metropolis, ReadyMade, Architectural Record, Harvard Design Magazine, and many other publications.

Talk | 20,000 Billion Dollars: The New American Challenge

French author Edouard Tétreau shares his impressions of the U.S. after a three-year stay, with humorous tales of his trips to the geographic center of the country and to its far edges along the Mexican border and in Silicon Valley. As a former financial analyst who made his first big splash by warning in March 2000 that the dot.com bubble was about to burst, Tétreau's new book, 20 000 Milliards de dollars, covers a range of topics with a particular focus on the U.S. economy as it spirals downward and then rebounds after the financial crisis. Although he finds much to admire in the U.S., Tétreau warns of the perils posed to the international economy by the debt-driven U.S. economy, which he says could soon reach 20,000 billion dollars in public debt if it doesn't change course. Tétreau is an advisor to a number of European Fortune 500 CEOs. His first book, Analyste au coeur de la folie financière, won the French Senate Prize for best economics book of the year.

With Myra Alperson, author of Nosh New York: The Food Lover's Guide to New York City's Most Delicious Neighborhoods. Author Reading | Alan Riding discusses his book And the Show Went On: The Cultural Life of Nazi-Occupied Paris

The New York Times reporter introduces us to a panoply of writers, painters, composers, actors and dancers who kept working throughout the occupation. Maurice Chevalier and Édith Piaf sang before French and German audiences. Pablo Picasso, whose art was officially banned, continued to paint in his Left Bank apartment. More than two hundred new French films were made, including Marcel Carné’s classic, Les Enfants du paradis. Thousands of books were published by authors as different as the virulent anti-Semite Céline and the anti-Nazis Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre. Meanwhile, as Jewish performers and creators were being forced to flee or, as was Irène Némirovsky, deported to death camps, a small number of artists and intellectuals joined the resistance.
