Discussion | Freud, Secularism and Jewish History

The Jewish Cultural Studies series presents a public panel on Sigmund Freud and Jewish history. As the inventor of psychoanalysis, a prominent secularist, and an essayist on human nature and modern life, Freud was incontestably one of the most influential Jewish thinkers of modern times. But what role should his work play in Jewish intellectual history? How did Freud himself write a secular history of the Jewish people, and to what effect? Panelists discuss Freud’s place in Jewish history, his contributions to secularism, and his impact on American culture. Speakers include David Aberbach, author of Surviving Trauma: Loss, Literature, and Psychoanalysis and Turning Points in Jewish Intellectual History; Richard H. Armstrong, author of A Compulsion for Antiquity: Freud and the Ancient World; and Andrew R. Heinze, author of Jews and the American Soul and Adapting to Abundance: Jewish Immigrants, Mass Consumption, and the Search for American Identity. Moderated by Richard J. Bernstein, author of Freud and the Legacy of Moses

Lecture | Ralph Walker and the Making of 1 Wall Street

The great Art Deco tower of 1 Wall Street culminates architect Ralph Walker’s 1920s skyscraper designs. More expensive and elaborate than his firm's many previous telephone and telegraph buildings, 1 Wall Street epitomized Walker's concept of “humanism,” a modern approach to the integration of hand-craft and machine work, expressed inside and out in the building’s rippling curtain walls and dramatically draped interior spaces. The lecture is delivered by Kate Holliday, an architectural historian and Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington. Her research focuses on American architecture and theory, particularly interactions with Europe. Her book Leopold Eidlitz: Architecture and Idealism in the Gilded Age won the 2008 Book of the Year Award from the southeast chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.

Lecture | Venerating the Books: Rituals and Magic Surrounding the Scriptures of the Three Abrahamic Faiths

With Ronald J. Brown. Catholics kiss it during Mass, Jews bury discarded copies in the earth like a corpse, Muslims touch it to absorb its powers. All three “Religions of the Book” venerate their tests; attribute miraculous powers to it; shroud its origins in myth and legend; surround its use, preservation, and disposal with rituals and even magic; and cover it with gold, gems, and artwork. Until today, synagogues use only hand written texts on parchment, churches have a Bible on permanent display and carry it through the church during worship, and mosques recite the Koran only in the original Arabic language.
